the box is pretty neat concept.

SD2 - Glass Bed, Fans on PCB and Y motor, Custom enclosure
Slicer - Simplify3D

Re: dual colors single extruder

My bet is that the Cyclops will be a less expensive and more precise option...

SD2 - Stock - Enclosure - Heated Bed - Glass Plate - Auto Fire Extinguisher
Ord Bot Hadron - RAMPS 1.4 - Bulldog XL - E3D v6 - 10" x 10" PCB Heated Build w/SSR - Glass Plate
Thanks for All of Your Help!

Re: dual colors single extruder

Im just wondering (and hoping) that you can do more than 2 colors, if thats the case, ill be so damn happy.  Also, if you design it properly, you could design your own support structures with the dissolvable filaments.

Re: dual colors single extruder

You would think that it would be a short step to multiple colors.  The fact that it fuses the cuts together on the fly fascinates me.  Very cool!

If you build it they will come. Then they will make fun of it, tell you it's not worth doing and go home and try to copy you.

It seems like that might have problems with sufficiently different materials like support versus abs (or maybe not :-).

Re: dual colors single extruder

Ohhhhhhhh...... Add this to a printer with dual extrusion so you can still have differing support materials along with multiple colors.  Even better. big_smile

Re: dual colors single extruder

its a dye? that wont work for dissolving support.

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

Re: dual colors single extruder

as a simple plug and playish device this might be cool, but for the cost of the box you could buy another extruder and all the bits to diy.
on another note this is where i'd put my money, or filament..

I like the way you think.

Re: dual colors single extruder

same as cyclops.
any time you have to waste material and time purging filaments between each change of color/type its gonna take that much longer to print and use/waste much more material also

Re: dual colors single extruder

only trinkets need multi color prints to avoid finishing/painting. not what I consider 3D printing being mostly for. as other faster cheaper methods already exist for such jobs.
duel extruders for easy removal of support material is a nice way to get closer to powder type 3D printer results at easier/lower cost methods with less lab type facilities for dealing with the plastic dust or harsh chemicals drained in photo etching etc. though neither methods cure the wasted support material issue even if you regrind/re-use it. still there is time/money wasted. just have to weigh if your wasting enough to warrant paying for the powder type system or just live with what your using for the type prints being made. if my projects/jobs had enough sudden interest/growth to need more 3D printers I would likely include a duel extruder, larger build surface model in the mix but still add some standard models just to handle quantities and aid in printer down time support to maintain job delivery timelines (unlike SD has done)

You can recycle that material, so it is only wasted if you throw it away.

yes I stated that above "even if you regrind/re-use it." which many dont have ability for buying equipment and all the extra work, time, electricity bills etc it still adds to the time and materials of each print if resales are the goal.

With one centralized recycling facility, you could print until you have enough of the towers where the extruder purges colors, and packaging them up into a flat rate box and ship them out. From there the owner of the recycling facility may pay you directly for the material, or offer a discount on a new roll(s) of filament. Using this process, a user of a dual color/single nozzle hotends, could recover their material cost from color purging.

It would not make much sense for every person with a dual color/ single nozzle system to have a granultor, filament extrusion machine, and a winder.

But how well will it work. and how much money will it take to get one.

Interesting concept. But in the early stages of development. I went to there web page very basic info.
it seems to be compatible with most printers. and it appears it will do 4 colors. May even be able to more in the future.

No info on price availability etc as of  this post.
I expect one has to use like material as mixing materials with different process temps would play havack .
they are looking for beta testers for the serous users amoungst us.
I certainly see advantages of sending mufti filaments through one extruder and advantages of multiple extruders.
I say keep the ideas coming that is how this technology will advance. The concepts that prove practical affordable and reliable will flourish.
