Topic: Solidoodle Type Frame

It seems I have enough spare parts to build a new printer from scratch. All I need are motors, wires, bearings, platform, and...you guessed it...A FRAME!! wink

I am looking at this for a frame and I don't know what size print area I want for now. X and Y may stay in accordance with my 6x6" area, but Z is up to my choosing.
My question to the panel is this: I want to keep the build cheap, but I want the materials fairly easy to work with and they have to be magnetic.
I have heavily considered T-Slotted frames, but they are aluminum and would only make things harder in the grand scheme of designing.
Any suggestions? I would REALLY like to build a frame capable of 8x8x8, but I don't have an SD3/4 to base measurements on.

It's a tossup of this project or making an OB1.4

Re: Solidoodle Type Frame

I have an empty SD2 frame powder coated black if you're interested in it.

Why magnetic?

Re: Solidoodle Type Frame

He could just epoxy magnets to the aluminum frame.

I assumed he meant made out of a metal that magnets stick to so that things can be easily stuck to it with magnets.  Eg. plexiglass covers, LCD panel, etc.

Right. Epoxy magnet to non-ferrous frame, now you can stick things to it. big_smile

Hey, how about making the frame out of magnetic material...then you could stick a ferrous cover on it without magnets; or you can epoxy steel washers to acrylic sheets to stick to the frame tongue

Genius! Lets start making neodymium t-slot extrusion.

Re: Solidoodle Type Frame

Seriously, I would not discount the 20 x 20 T-slot extruded AL...

- Easy to assemble
- It makes a very rigid framework

and if you want, you can just pop some T-nuts with flat head screws anywhere along each outer edge (your magnetic spots) for magnets to stick to...

On second thought...it might be a bit brittle! smile

EDIT:  Although if you run out of bench top space, you could just stick the whole thing to the side of the Fridge!

Re: Solidoodle Type Frame

I've actually considered aluminum t slot for the frame and then designing pulley brackets/rod receivers that would slide on to the frame then just screw into place. And yeah, I could work a notch in there to recess a magnet into the print.
But a powder coated frame is a little too tempting smile

I think printer #3 will be a T slot frame. The plus side of using those is there are so many designs already on Thingiverse to easily work with the slots like the OB1.4 printer.

Damn...whilst shopping for parts, SD is no longer offering SD2 platforms.
No me gusta.
