Topic: need Mod Masters for SD2

since Solidoodle has become a field of dreams. I need all you master Modifiers of SD 3D printers to help me gather a shopping list of how to turn my SD2 into a 6x6x6 version of what the workbench apprentice was hiped up to be. need a duel E3d type extruder carriage with fan mounts for cooling extruders and filament motor also fans for extruder tip for PLA and bridges etc. then film bed heaters (correct watts/temps) motherboard to run all this without needing soldered etc. I already have vapor/fume removal fan. looks like I will be scrapping my $200 "deluxe case inclosure" for a home made plexi cover with easy removal of panels for access when needed while also covering Filament rolls in use to help keep them dry. the newest hotends are 1/3rd size of old SD2 hotend and can be used for all popular plastics even exotics. new mother boards have everything including micro SD card slot for computer free printing.

OH also need compact power supply of 400-500 watts that can either hang on rear of printer next to mother board with cooling fans for both. or inside bottom left out of way if possible.

anything Im missing?

sounds just like what SD promised nearly then some. bet I can do all this for under the lowest price of the Apprentice also.
then add the scanner kit posted on this forum, Filastruder and regrinder and still be under workbench price just smaller build area which is all I need for my needs.

I dont think 3D printing has gotten fast enough or fine enough detail to need the large build plates yet. I dont intend to let my printer run for days on end just to print a plastic item, especially when most such items can be bought retail from injector/blowmold manufacturers for pennys compared to that time, material, electric use.

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

Re: need Mod Masters for SD2

You won't have 6x6x6 if you use a conventional dual extruder, since the printer nozzles will be spaced apart. You'll have more like 4.5x6x6.

You'll need a bigger carriage, probably have to design that yourself. Use 2x Lawsy MK5 extruders and another NEMA17 stepper. You'll need a 5+ stepper driver motherboard, like RUMBA.

What do you need 500 watts for? A 300 watt supply should be more than plenty. I would not trust a Chinese knockoff, Meanwell is a great brand:

Plexiglas (acrylic) is cheap, if you need it cut and draw the DXF I can lasercut it.

In short, all the answers you seek are already out there - you just have to do a little legwork (searching) to find them.

+1

n2ri- you may as well upgrade to Lawsy's carriages as a whole while you are at it and grab some LM8UU linear bearings while you are printing the upgraded parts.
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:104059 has both the .stl files, but Lawsy also shared his .skp for the whole thing...this can easily be modified. smile

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

thought I saw on their site a MK6 that was much more compact? also are there stepper motors more compact yet so that a new duel carriage could be designed as 1 that held both extruders in just a bit bigger space than the old single extruder?

as for power supply I have seen many posts about needing that much to run all the motors, fans, extruders and bed heater etc

Saw on what site? The limiting factor isn't the size of the extruder printed parts, its the distance from the stepper shaft to the edge of the stepper motor.

Even if you dropped to geared NEMA11s (you cannot use ungeared NEMA11s, they are too weak) then you trade the X dimension for Y dimension, as you'll hit the back of the motor against the Z rails. Either way, you have to compromise somewhere, and even with geared NEMA11s you'll lose both X and Y travel.

Solidoodle's own site says 320 watts. Put in some effort, and don't believe everything you read until you've seen proof.

Re: need Mod Masters for SD2

There is a bit confusion over the extruder modies for the E3D now that the v6 is out.
MK5 body is acceptable for the E3D v5. The MK6 is specifically for the E3D v6...although many still call the MK6 the MK5. It can get confusing in conversation. This is the v6 body. Do not go trying to hunt down v5 hotends because:
1) They are no longer being made
2) You want the v6 since it is smaller which will be crucial when modding for dual extrusion.

Power supply question: nope. With a RUMBA, you have everything you need with a PSU elmoret gave. You will also have 2 ports for fans which you can splice into to share your E motor fan with the E3D fan per port....or just have them run off an alternate PSU like I did.

Re: need Mod Masters for SD2

so Solidoodle crammed duel extruders into an SD3 frame and used an SD2 base with 8 inches height? so maybe I need an old SD3 to kit bash then

Maybe wait on the dual extruders.  E3D is getting closer to a dual material single nozzle hotend.  That might give you dual extrusion without loss of build space, depending on how the extruder part would work.  If you feed it with Bowdens, then you wouldn't lose any space.

Who says its single nozzle? big_smile

Though having seen the design, its named Cyclops for a reason. Its also ~2 months out from being available, so that may factor into your timeline.

Re: need Mod Masters for SD2

They did post a video of single-nozzle color-mixing tests awhile back.  They don't exactly follow the Apple-level R&D secrecy that Solidoodle aspires to.

Re: need Mod Masters for SD2

Is the Cyclops going to be in your store just like the Kraken?

Ulitmaker 2, a few repraps, Custom Big FFF 3D printer with heated chamber.

Agreed, I was just keeping it fun. Though I've seen the design of both, and this is different from the aforementioned color mixing.

Yes sir!

I haven't gone that far, but pointers to all my mods can be found here:
