Topic: $3.00 filter

I used these plumbing filters for 5 years and pounds and pounds of filament going through 0.5mm nozzle without any problems at all.
Unless you are using 0.2mm nozzle for printing, you can double those filters and place them inside the barrel and turn them 45 degree apart from each other, effectively doubling their filtering capability.

One problem is that these are not sold anymore. Other brands i found did not have mesh as fine so i found an alternative.
"Silver screens". Those are DIRT CHEAP and are screens only (exactly what you need) and will work just as good.

I buy brass plumbing head caps similar to whats on the picture below. They are hollow inside and allow me to place filter inside without any retaining ring/clamp (what ever you call those) making it even cheaper.
I simply cut the needed circle and place it inside.

Clearing it out is as simple as pulling it out when hot and giving it a blow with a blow torch. Then put it back in and its ready to go again and again and again.

Re: $3.00 filter

This won't work as well as a real melt filter nozzle, because there is no retaining ring to hold the filter in place and seal the edges. I've tried. If I didn't have to do all that CNC machining, I wouldn't.

Re: $3.00 filter

Retainer is great, but see I install it vertically so it won't fall off.
I was finally able to print so like I said, it works for me

Re: $3.00 filter

has to be true micron sized over 100% of surface used. you dont want to risk using filament filtered through something like this plugging your extruder on printer as it get narrowed down many times smaller than the filament maker nozzle

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

I know, but regardless of what everyone says, it works !

Re: $3.00 filter

Tony one of my past professions  was making silk screens for printing one of our shops printed glass using stainless steel mesh . the mesh had electrodes and acted as a heating element to keep the in warm /hot do not know temps or voltates amps etc.  but could be useful for the filasruder.
this mesh is available in 304 and t316 stainless cloth and ranges from 40 to 400 mesh (threads and holes per inch. I would think you could us a punch to punch out the disks you need. at about  $20 US a square meter you could get lots of filters. from a piece of material.

Re: $3.00 filter

Thats very nice but then it wont be $3.00 purchase.
There is already a nozzle on the market with 3 spare screens for $20. If i was making my own nozzles and sell them, i would probably need to buy a roll and a punch to cut out needed diameter with ease, but i dont so.....

you mean you have been lucky so far not having something plug your printer? or just making filament? I wouldnt buy such filament and risk messing up a Hot End and print job over that little of savings

Re: $3.00 filter

I've thrown away pounds of filament. 1 because no one shipped filter that was RECOMMENDED with 1.75 nozzle
2 ABS 747 is piece of trash, i am throwing away remaining pound. 3 I see RARELY small pieces do go thru but they are so small that its hard to even see them. Thus the system has proven to work. The only thing i would do is to attach the screen with some small screws and cut some groves (or as drill pattern suggested) for more "flow thru" surface area.

Otherwise i have not had 1 jam with dirt since i extruded about 1.5LB of ABS.
It had multiple jams for unknown reasons, perhaps diameter issues and a know hobbed bolt problem i have, but otherwise its running and running great.

In other words, stop being a scientist and accept the fact that $3.00 filter works like a charm regardless of all the speculations and theories i get thrown at my face each reply.

Re: $3.00 filter

The melt filter is recommended for folks that use printer nozzles with 0.5mm orifices or smaller. This is clearly stated on the product page, it is not a secret:

In a prior thread you posted, I said that you needed to use a melt filter nozzle because your printer has a 0.4mm nozzle. Many people print with larger nozzles only, and therefore do not need a melt filter nozzle.

The sink filter screen, without a retaining ring, will let some debris through as you have observed. I have already tried it myself, in fact it is the second attempt I made at melt filtering. In my opinion, "letting some particles through" is not "working like a charm".  Attaching with screws will not seal the entire perimeter of the screen the same way that a retaining clip will. I've put a lot of thought and testing into this. Your solutions to problems are slowly approaching the solutions I created over a year ago - first you said a melt filter was a bad solution, now you have a melt filter, and you say the next step would be to cut grooves (which mine already has). You could have saved a lot of time just skipping right to a pre made melt filter! I guess it all comes down to how you value your time.

You say you've extruded 1.5lbs, that's great! I've extruded 275lbs so far. I have some experience under my belt. My words are not "speculations and theories". I hesitate to post publicly that which I am not 100% sure of.

One more thing - PA-747 is what Makerbot uses in their filament, among many others.

Smile smile is all i have. Evidence is right here.

This is 100% solid infill. I modified the hopper mount points because they are weak and not designed with 3d printing in mind.
3D printed parts always need little extra strength to hold up that is usually achieved by more surface area.

Re: $3.00 filter

many feet later here is what i see:
This is how much PLA (not counting about same of ABS) extruded perfectly clean

This is the filter
http://i994.photobucket.com/albums/af64/garbageplace/DSC00012_zpsa0b24603.jpg~original
I had to clear out ABS by hand because flow was getting very slow. I thought it was because of dirt but it was just old ABS started to block the flow. You can see some around the filter edge.

Its cleared out and put back extruding some more clear filament.

Re: $3.00 filter

So i bought nozzle with 250 micron filter and a retaining ring inside (similar to what they sell here) and found out that filter is exactly the same as one i bought for $3.00

I am almost willing to say: $20 says filastruder sells exactly the same thing. Even at the hardware store those filters were just the next isle smile but i wont.

Its awesome !
I bought it for $19.99+$2.50 for shipping or $15 international. BUT i didn't get whats on the picture. What i got instead is similar but cheaper cap. It wasnt as solid as pictured, it was much more hollow, just like those i found at the home depot.
It still works great, i dont see reason to complain about it.
