Topic: Another Repair Part...

Came home last night to find my garage door opener motor head spinning freely :-(
The coupling between the motor and drive screw was blown apart!

So, a few measurements and CAD time:

And 40 minutes later:

A perfect fit!

Re: Another Repair Part...

I love it.  I am new here and new to 3-d printing but I  have had a home machine shop of sorts for over 10 years.
Several times I have machined parts to fix something.
IMHO what you show is an excellent application for 3-d printing.
Great when you can make a part faster than  finding and ordering one or making a trip to the store.

Thanks Tin,

Yeah, I'd love to see a repository of repair items "not found in stores".  Thingiverse is not focused enough...a site organized by category i.e.  Hoover / Vacuum / Model #XXX / Nozzles...you get the idea.

One of these days...

Cheers!

Its not much better... but http://www.yeggi.com/ being a quasi-aggregater at least gets over the 'its not on thingiverse' hump wink

Re: Another Repair Part...

these couplings are made of plyable soft plastic not what 3D printers use. they are available at HVAC supply stores even a universal kit for most sizes and lengths for under $30. need 6 inch long part for many as thats average length

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

Re: Another Repair Part...

Those stores are always closed when I need them...besides, this was more fun.

Re: Another Repair Part...

also it needs to be longer so that it seats shoulder to shoulder not allowing any cogs to be visable so it has max grip also not allowing it to slide end to end

Not meaning to be rude...but I was not asking for a critique in this case.  This is the Print Showoff Area...and this is where you say "Great Job" etc.

i believe you are thinking of an angular deflection coupler, like a spider coupler or a love-joy. But, actually, based on how their coupler blew apart it looks like the fracture of a hard plastic not a soft plastic.

I think there's a decent chance this coupler is not needed for angular deflection reasons but rather just for assembly or something, one reason or another preventing a direct coupling (maybe even as a cheap destruction torque limiter.)

(In defense of OPs repair job.)

To OP: if it turns out you needed something softer...you can take the file you have, google "OpenSCAD molding script" and use that to generate a two part mold that you fill with a cornstarch-silicone mixture (often called "Oogloo"). It would make a flexible part. That would be intense!

[At first thought it's not super easy to mold a hollow cyclinder like that, but I'm use there is a way with more thought.]

Yes!  The coupling was an easy method of assembly and allowed them to use identical parts for the drive components; and ALSO serves as a destructive torque limiter...Not too much need for a flex coupler as the motor and shaft are fairly well aligned.  As far as torque to operate the door, I was able to spin the driven shaft with my two fingers.  The torque issue comes into play when the door slams down too hard on the floor when closing.  I have dialed that up a notch so this does not happen.

Edit:  The Mold material idea is cool...might be my fallback if it shatters!

Re: Another Repair Part...

Good Job I find myself doing quick projects like this all the time.  It's more about the satisfaction of a job well done than always looking for the most cost effective route.  As long as it works that's all that matters and so what if it breaks in another few years.  Print another one or beef up the design if need be.  It's not the end of the world if it breaks... Oh no! my garage door opener isn't working.

It is about the fun and satisfaction of literally creating something out of thin air (with CAD, a machine and filament, of course) and then having it work!  Much fun!

several sites linked to on that link either dont have item stated, want you to register to download anything, you have to buy item or site is gone. so basicly you only have Thingaverse available

Re: Another Repair Part...

I was just telling how this coupling is designed and where to find some. and no the ones I spoke of are not for angle connection. I meant no disrespect just offering info that I knew about them.

Good job
I know last month the 6 way valve handle on my pool pump broke ( on a Sunday) doing a google search I found out I would have to by the whole valve so I glued it back together measured it up and printed one.

The handle probably only gets a splash every now and then when you're cleaning the pump filter basket right? As we're (supposed to) say here... NO WORRIES MATE. tongue
