Topic: Making ones own flexible filament?

I'm curious to know if anyone has tried it?

With my Filastruder coming and several of my new projects requiring flexible parts I'm wondering if it'd be possible to make something similar to the range of flexible filaments available?
I've attempted to work out what kind of material they use but have had very limited success in that endeavour. Seems most companies prefer to keep their material sheets a secret.

Anyway, any advice or even a point in the right direction would be wonderful!
Cheers.

Serin,

I'm not a Chemist, but best I can tell, the main additive would be a thermoplastic polyurethane at some level.  Check out this MSDS for NinjaFlex (note the entry marked as "Proprietary"):

Cheers!

Re: Making ones own flexible filament?

Hm!

I've not much of an idea of how to read MSDS's but this caught my eye:

Chemical Name: NinjaFlex Color State(s)
Acrylonitrile Blue CA, MA, MI, MN, NJ, PA, WA < 100 ppm
PCBs (≤ 25 ppm) Blue CA
Polyurethane Polyester Elastomer All colors NJ, PA
Silica, Crystalline Red CA

Curious indeed.

Re: Making ones own flexible filament?

Those would be the colorants...edit: I guess different States in the US have various minimum safe levels of Parts Per Million, etc.

No prob if you're making your own!

Re: Making ones own flexible filament?

We will have a flexible pellet material coming out soon. Currently you can get some of it from us but a few little extrusion details are still being worked out. It feels like ninjaflex. Send me a PM if you want to test some.

I'll be putting in an order of your PLA in a couple of weeks so I shall PM you around then smile

Unbelievably, occasionally, WorkCover can actually deliver something vaguely useful:

If you intend to play with your own extrusion - you should make sure you're up to speed on how to interpret an MSDS - it reveals all the potential hazards of a product and also gives you a clear understanding of the product.

(Sidenote: Plus, it lets you do fun things like point out all 'variants' of Nuerofen are actually the exact same product, just pacakged differently wink Compare the MSDSs at http://www.rb-msds.com.au/home/default.aspx smile )

Shock horror!
Thanks Adrian, that'll be quite handy. Should be quite an education, I've not really looked into materials composition/science.

And yeah.. ahah I worked that thing with Nurofen after my first couple of serious migraines.. tongue
