Topic: ABS slurry ratio

I have had a hard time getting ABS to stick, and recently I tried using an ABS slurry. Much to my dismay it did not work, and that is because I was putting in to much ABS into the acetone. Anyone know of a proper ratio of acetone to ABS?

Re: ABS slurry ratio

I put in just enough to change the color of the acetone and make it look milky and it worked well enough that I have broken glass trying to get prints off before (I should have been more patient).

However, I stopped using ABS slurry when I found the glue stick trick.  Have you done a search for or tried that yet?  It is way easier and cleaner.

Glue stick? Like the Elmers purple kind?

Re: ABS slurry ratio

Are you heating the bed? To what temperature?

100C with hairspray on glass works fine for me. An enclosure is mandatory with ABS.

Re: ABS slurry ratio

+1 to glass and hairspray.
Yes they are talking about the purple kind, but other have reported regular sticks working as well.

Glass and hairspray - 97c. I can squeez up to 8 prints without reapplying.
60% of the time, it works every time. big_smile

If I'm getting lifting on a very large or dense print, I cheat by applying some Krazy glue (with brush applicator) on the corners. Stops lifting in its tracks.

Yes, the elmer's purple kind.

I use elmer's purple glue stick and it has been so much better than aquanet hairspray for me.  With glue stick and a full enclosure, I have printed an 8 hour object with sharp corners that took up most of the bed without a single hint of warping or lifting.  Then just let it cool and it pops right off and I have a smooth finished bottom layer every time.  There is no mess like hairspray and it won't get all over your rods.  Your glass bed wipes clean with water and a rag easily.  You can buy it practically anywhere, I pick up a stick the same place I get my groceries for less than $2.  I have 50+ hours printed on my glass bed and it still looks like new.  Every time I convince someone here to switch to glue stick and put away the hair spray (except for the initial stick of glass to kapton covered bed), I feel like I have done my good deed for the day.

Re: ABS slurry ratio

I have some laying around since I am a student so I will try the glue stick method. For an enclosure would cardboard and aluminum foil work? My bed is usally at 104 degrees. Is this too high? Thanks for all of the support guys!

Re: ABS slurry ratio

Solidoodle had the wrong temps on their website for a long time and recently updated it. if you have the newer motherboard (REV-E) the temp should be 210 - 215 and 105 for the bed.

heres the support info

http://support.solidoodle.com/hc/en-us/ … e-Settings

if your still having trouble with it sticking, use the enclosure, add a brim (in slic3r -> support & brim), clear the nozzle before it starts printing, add more solid layers on the bottom.

if your still having more problems check out the stickied post in help/maintenance/repair on the forum. titled "  it doesnt stick it just drags around"

+1 only I only have to reapply if I clean the glass otherwise just keep printing.

Didn't think it could be had in Australia, but look at this:

Bunnings sell it too FYI... and I got some from Home Hardware...

Re: ABS slurry ratio

Well, I have a bunnings at the end of my street, so that's probably the more convenient option...

Re: ABS slurry ratio

Cardboard, poster board... anything will do to help keep the heat in and drafts away. Most people here go with plexi glass sides and top.

Re: ABS slurry ratio

Actually... PEI is the bomb. I personally love a build plate that requires zero prep and works for ABS HIPS and PLA with no mods other than temp setpoint.

Hair spray, glue sticks, slurry, tape, its all so 2013.....

Re: ABS slurry ratio

Yeah... just let it cool and it slides off.. or if your desperate, just flex the panel and it pops off... or run it under cold water...

Re: ABS slurry ratio

I still use Aquanet on glass. Works so well I've never needed to change. I did pledge for a GeckoTek board on Kickstarter though.
