Topic: Colorfabb WoodFill

I love this ColorFabb Woodfill AKA Woodlike filament. 220 Degrees and all I basically am using a standard slic3r profile and bumping my speed up to 150% on the slider; .25mm height .  Otherwise you are supposed to not keep it in the hot end while not being extruded for too long to avoid clogs. So far I have had no clogs and prints nice. Does not change color with temp but I've read it can be wood-stained and I tried some watered down some acrylic as a stainish paint and looks good.

Re: Colorfabb WoodFill

Did you need a larger nozzle for this filament?
I know Laywoo requires .5-.6mm nozzle

Re: Colorfabb WoodFill

I am using the standard .4 nozzle for it. On the colorfabb site it says you can use a .4 nozzle. (Though i'm sure bigger makes it less likely to clog, but I have had zero clogs thus far)

I was glad to find some of this stuff in the USA at PrintedSolid

Re: Colorfabb WoodFill

This is colorfabb woodfill FINE I am using. Apparently there is a Woodfill COURSE out there somewhere too just to be specific.

Oh and this stuff is FAR less britial and comes on a spool!

Re: Colorfabb WoodFill

And since it's "About 70% colorfabb PLA and 30% recycled woodfibres". Seems I was generally able to treat it as PLA (did better under a fan)

Re: Colorfabb WoodFill

Very nice!  If you happen to try a wood-tinted stain, I'd like to see photos of the results.

I can think of some projects I'd like to try this on!

Less brittle than Laywoo?
If that is so, I would be pressed as to which I should invest in. I have read of many accounts that were able to get the "wood markings" from temp changes, which is nice. But Strength is definately a good selling point.

Re: Colorfabb WoodFill

Yes, more like PLA level strength. Laywood just broke soooo easy.

As for wood variations in color, I don't think this wood stuff does that. If you want changing color you need to go with laywood. Though this woodfill is easier and stronger. I never got my woodfill to work right even with a nozzle change.

I still haven't gotten myself some woodstain but I found at the Printed Solid blog that they did indeed try and stained it and it seemed like sucesss (look halfway down the page). http://www.printedsolid.com/testing-new … -and-more/

When I get around to trying wood stain myself i'll try and post some pictures smile

Re: Colorfabb WoodFill

I wonder if extrusion temp affects how much stain it takes.  The darkness seems to vary by layers.   Also I wonder if there is a solvent that will smooth it.

Re: Colorfabb WoodFill

I think maybe I just left the stain in the divots of the print in a little longer then the rest, hence the color variation.

Re: Colorfabb WoodFill

Bear in stained woodfill. I think the gel type woodstain would work better for this just so it sticks a lil easier.

Re: Colorfabb WoodFill

Upon further inspection, it seems the stain takes less to the lower areas of the print layers where there is less of the fluffy wood type and more of the PLA. This actually turns out to be good when staining it as it makes slight color rings if you are looking closely.

Very cool! I have often thought what staining would look like with the wood filaments...and now I know smile

Re: Colorfabb WoodFill

Thanks.

I plan to get some Cherry and Oak gel stain soon also. The Walnut one I have been using is nice but I like the idea of having a few more choices. The Walnut stain one was aquired from Father in law as a test. smile

Out of the 4, I'm more eager to see the effects of maple...seems like it would have a more natural look.

Re: Colorfabb WoodFill

Of this batch on some rough prints I think the cherry looks best. Though the orginal walnut also looked pretty good from the earlier tests. The long and the short of it that this material holds the stain very well on the color you see when you open the cans of wood stain.
