Topic: Problems with ABS feeding once again.

Thought I had the ABS feed problem fixed.  Turns out I was wrong.  Before I started, I took the entire print head apart and made sure it was clean with no blockages or blobs of PLA in it. 

Put it back together and videotaped the priming of the extruder.

Sorry about the blur, my camera phone couldn't focus right.

Note that there are index markings on both the toothed feeder gear and the bearing, so that you can see when it is and isn't turning.

When first started up, the toothed gear turns, but not the bearing, I didn't have it set correctly to feed.

Once I get it feeding, it took 150 mm of the filament to (1.60 mm) to get any filament to extrude.

Notice that the bearing stops turning, at which point I tighten the feed tension screw.  This helps for a few moments, then I have to tighten it again.  Eventually I have it as tight as it can go.

Please also notice that I have to manually push the filament down to get it started again.

I have no idea why this is occuring, as the feeder works fine with PLA and PP.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I don't know what the problem is but a couple of observations.
1. When the filament strips like that you need to use a small brush to clean the teeth of the drive gear.
2. It is just as easy to over tighten that screw as it is to have it to loose as it smashes the filament.  Loosen it up clean everything.  When you restart your filament between the bearing and drive gear adjust it with out the motor turning and pull up on the filament.  You'll find a spot that seems to hold best.  Then re-clean that plastic out of the drive gear.
If that doesn't do it then you have a clog or your barrel is loose where it meets the peek.

I had previously cleaned the drive gear and had started the feed with the tension just tight enough that it would touch the filament, then tightened it as the feed progressed.

I had also completely cleaned the head portion including the peek and made sure that the barrel was tight to it when it was reassembled.

That is the point I got to with my stock SD hot end and I finally upgraded to the E3D.  Best thing I have ever done for my printer.  You can get one from elmoret (filastruder) do it for your sanity big_smile

So you had the same issue, where ABS wouldn't feed and PLA would?  And a new hot end fixed it?

PLA usually feeds easier than ABS - it gets "thinner" at its melt temp and is easier to force through the nozzle. The following could cause your issues:

- A jam, typically because a gap has formed between the brass barrel and the PTFE liner
- A clog, caused by debris in the nozzle
- Insufficient melt temperature
- Excessive feedrate

What temperature, what feedrate?

E3D is regarded as the best hotend, but I have also put ~40kg of ABS through a stock Solidoodle hot end.

I'm running the ABS at 205 and 60 mm/minute.

No signs of blockage.

And it most definitely fixes it.  Just in case you want the opinion from someone that doesn't sell them.
I like them so much I own three of them and two of them are still in the package.
My bet is on a gap between the brass barrel and the liner.

That's fine. If anything, 205 allowed the threads to deform slightly, creating the gap between the PTFE and brass.

I run MG94 ABS at 150mm/s, 200C through that stock SD hotend. With the E3D I could probably hit 225mm/s.

I had this problem too.

Is your Extrusion motor very hot?!!
If yes, it is the problem.

I had mine partially resolved.

I guess during the production process at SD, a big overlook by the assembly guys. The Heatsink to the extrusion Stepper is not contacting at all. Take a look at the pictures.

Even the thermal paste is not spreading since the heatsink is not contacting the stepper motor. Pls improve.

I had refix it with 3M Thermal Pad. Now the stepper is cool as a baby.
Normal Thermal Paste will do as well. No more missing step on the extrusion stepper.

I don't believe the extrusion motor is getting too hot, don't have the problem with PLA.  Pulled off the heatsink and it looks like it's about 1/2 covered with the white thermal past, and it's screwed on pretty tight.  Will get a temperature of the extruder motor next time I run it.

No problem. I understood. I had been struggling with it for past months too..
Do you try to apply more tension..?
If it skip step after increase tension, I am guessing it's stepper driver calibration. Perhaps a relook at the trimpot at the Stepper driver? I only manage to extrude at 9mm/s speed with success result. Going for E3D soon. But first to test out the Jhead MKV. Brought 2 set, hope they work.

The extruder motor is very cool to the touch, so I don't think its' an overheating problem.
