Topic: Glossary

There should be a list of words of parts, procedures, and outcomes so that it is easier to know what to keyword in when looking for information on something.

I don't know the universeal terms for everything.

Re: Glossary

It's called the search button.

Re: Glossary

I agree here is a start

Backlash is when parts are not smooth due to layers getting plastic running and other issues that cause a problem in the look

Is this a ok definition?

Re: Glossary

Regarding backlash: That is no where near the mark, bpulst. Adrian had a really detailed thread that explained everything with diagrams:

Once again, search is your friend.

Re: Glossary

Search may be your friend, but often search only discovers that everyone constantly uses a term that was possibly defined sometime in the depths of history, but you couldn't prove it.

For instance what the heck does "PID" actually mean? I know it has to do with controlling the way the heater works, but what does it stand for? Coming from linux, I'm sure it is a process ID :-). On the web, I can see that it means pelvic inflammatory disease, but I can't actually discover what the heck it means in the 3D printer world.

PEEK is another confusing one with lots of meanings, but I think I found it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyetheretherketone

It certainly wasn't 2nd for me - google was the first thing I tried, of course now that I've visited the wikipedia page, it has started coming up on the 1st page of search results (but still not 2nd). Must be those wacky google engineers and their personal search tuning :-).

Thanks for the pointer.

Re: Glossary

While its easy to LMGTFY and UTS as a reply to this request, have you actually done so recently? Search for E3D and tell me which post comes up first? then tell me which one you should follow. This forum is getting out of hand quick. There are 10 times more posts about 'how do I?' than there are about 'this is how to'. And its all over the place. Try to find the link where solidoodle has their hidden firmware and motherboard files on their website. I bookmarked it because the post is buried in an obscure thread.

Its easy for all the people who understand everything to knock down users who ask even the simplest of questions, but you have forgotten just how much there is to learn here. Not everyone has invested all the time we have in picking at all of the details. And quite frankly, this forum has alot to be desired in the form of organization, discipline, and misinformation.

Pick a simple topic like lifting and crawl backwards in time through the posts. Each topic will be wildly different with some replies being outdated or simply wrong.

Every info forum I have ever seen always has a "Noobs start here" right at the top. This is where people could be given all these 'useful' links to terminology, basic setup and operation, the wiki for damn sake.

Re: Glossary

I am going to plus 1 on this thread. I would definitely like to see some sort of noob guide with most of the information dumbed down to the lowest level.  It is hard to start from the bottom and work your way up, especially if the answer to your question is always "use the search button" . But I do appreciate every bit of help I can get.

Put it on the wiki?

It should be pointed out that solidoodle has updated the site to include this basic info.
