Topic: peachy $100 3d printer!

How has this not been posted?? this is amazing!
This guy put up a kickstarter 3 days ago asking for 50,000. it is already well over 200,000!!!
It used a brand new version of stereo lithography that is driven by your computers sound card and the z level is measured by the microphone jack. *mind blown*
I love my solidoodle 3 but i am jumping on this just for the heck of it!! haha

I have lots of thoughts on this, but for starters: Precision galvos are really hard to make cheaply.

August 2014 is a long ways away....

Agreed. I was rushing out the door and didn't have time to elaborate.

First of all, I think it is the most innovative and original 3D-printing idea I've seen on Kickstarter. I think it is pretty clear how new and "outside the box" this is. It is a really intelligent solution, especially the drop size.

Design concerns:
- Drop size can vary by up to 10%, if everything else is held constant. That means if you design a part 50cm tall, you could have up to 5cm of variation.
- Requires a DC coupled sound card.
- How will it be calibrated? As it has no way of measuring the starting position of the resin, the x-y dimensions will be off by some scaling factor.
- Layer thickness is a function of how much volume has been printed. Since you're floating your reservoir on top, the resin thickness (and therefore layer thickness) will shrink as you build. Of course, this can be alleviated by increasing the surface area of the resin to part volume ratio, but then you need containers and resin quantities pretty large! You could account for this in software to an extent, though.

Logistic concerns:
- He's on pace to have over 5,000 orders. I have no idea how he'll handle that logistically. It was pretty intense fulfilling 470 kit orders for Filastruder, and that was with the help of half a dozen friends. He's looking at a challenge an order of magnitude larger.
- August 2014 is a long time away. There could be a whole lot of innovation between now and then.
- The price entices a lot of people that are new to 3D printing. This is a very new, very untested technology - think reprap in the very early days. There are going to be a lot of bugs to work out. People that have not dealt with 3D printing before may not be happy about that...
- Crowdfunding on two different sites is pretty strange.

In short: Really neat idea, not likely to get near the accuracy of FDM printers, could have massive problems fulfilling backer rewards.

It's $40/kg. That's in the same ballpark as ABS/PLA.

Re: peachy $100 3d printer!

all those concerns seems more than valid. im still really interested. I havent ordered yet since I dont have the extra money at the moment. (and that is going to put me at the bottom of the backers line! x_x ) lol
but either way, i am very interested to see where they go with this thing.

You make a lot of well thought-out points that I agree with, this one included. I just wanted to say that I think it's very likely that this will NOT work as advertised for a significant portion of the people who will receive this. Through a combination of the average person's technical inexperience and the kind of hokey way this 3D printer works, some unknowable percentage (maybe 10%?) will not get anything but a mess out of this kit. But most of those people (probably) won't mind, because they're only out $100. YGWYPF.

Re: peachy $100 3d printer!

How will this thing handle vibration from the environment or other physical disturbance, if it gets waves or is sloshing.
You probably can not leave the resin out in the light very long or it will degrade.

Re: peachy $100 3d printer!

Way cool device.  The concerns brought up here are valid and workable for the daring.  I went for the Kit and added the reservoir and legs, as well as 100mL of resin.  the resin will cure slowly under florescent lights or sunlight so keep in in a cool dark place (separate from your beer!)  thanks for sending this

Re: peachy $100 3d printer!

Looks like this product is still active and has a new different control board. Still taking pre orders .
Looks interesting one needs to get a couple 3 or the right sises straight wall glass storage containers/jars.
Looks like one can get started on sla printing for about $ 200 for the litre the jars and a liter of resin.

It's neat, but if I decide to buy I'd be more tempted to get a Form 1+. Or I could buy both and then compare....

Re: peachy $100 3d printer!

well this product has been in development for almost 2 years.
this is still being offered as a kit  you get the main working parts the builder needs to add 3 jars or cylinders to build this and of course buy the juice.
has anyone here purchased one and used one?
IMHO still looks a bit experimental and flimsy .
Buy in price is tempting but I expect a time investment to get good prints.
Likely need to make an amber or red plexy case  to protect it from the light of day. Or a ply tube to surround the resivour.

Re: peachy $100 3d printer!

when I searched this printer last year it had another zero in the price and toted as smallest portable 3D printers, but found a few smaller and all where around $1k but one was $3k. found the liquid resin SLA ibox nano cube for $300 but maker would not reply how to convert STL to SLA for it like he said Slic3r could do (need printer shape settings for that) so looked like pie in sky tech to me. just be careful with all the kickstarter 3D stuff lately. many are not being brought to market as promised. do extensive research and read forums etc for true consumer info b4 investing. "if it sounds to good to be true, its likely hipe" is best quote still today;^) I got a Solidoodle 2, about 2 years ago after 3 years looking into 3D printers. now sometimes wish I had waited for couple new features other printers have for same or less money but. still making due at least so. I feel I done OK all things considered. any new electronic tech soon is outdated but mine still does what I wanted from it and since it was a main stream brand open source it can be modified and repaired years after discontinued.

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

Re: peachy $100 3d printer!

If you go to the company web site you will see you can order the kit now for $100.

http://www.peachyprinter.com/

the pre assembled pro version is indeed $ 1000 and the pre- assembled standard version $400 . the resin is $ 60 per liter.

Re: peachy $100 3d printer!

not seeing specs or info. the cheapest way to buy resin is bulk/liters but must store out of light/heat and it expires like film also.

I too would like to hear how STL to SVG file conversion does as I have thousands of STL but none in SVG.

ibox nano sells their resin in tiny vials by the ounce/grams and marks them up 10x over liter cost. like $15 each vial. they do give specs though. which Peachy dont. also they have no UV protection for resin so if printing in light or even reflected Sun light it will harden in vat while printing. only takes mins. need to use vats preferably glass or non-stick material (they dont furnish. you do) also use smallest possible for item printed to limit wasting resin and watch that it dont run out b4 finished. resin is different than extruded materials as is powder SLA printing. wish they told how fine it can print layer wise. iboxe nano says down to 0.035mm which is thinner than Form1 and iboxe nano uses LED UV instead of lasers like this and Form1 which brings up another hazard I noticed with the way its construced and 2 lazers in open like the 3D scanner a member here sells. people need to take care about eye safety with this type devices. unless already blind I guess.

Look up Makerjuice. That is the company that Peachy partners with and developed a custom formulation just for the peachy. Makerjuice is supposed to be owned by the same guys.

You need to contact which ever company you backed with and give them your new address. They do not contact or confirm before shipping. That was all done during the payment phase.

Sounds like these may be starting to ship? Maybe?

Really curious to hear from people actually using them.
