Re: Nylon

all mine is in the clam shell thing as well.  Departed, do you see the need to upgrade to garolite for printing?

Probably not. I am having success with using masonite so I am going to keep using it for now. Only problem with the masonite is that the side touching the masonite will have a small layer of fibers bonded to it that you have to sand off.  Took about a minute with sandpaper to remove from the part. I will try to take a picture of this tomorrow.

If you use garolite you have to minimize the surface area that touches it as it bonds extremely well.  For what I am printing this would not work.

will have to order me some as well.

Re: Nylon

Lowes only had masonite (hardboard) available in 4x8ft. I ended up buying some a 3x5ft whiteboard that had tempered masonite on the back.  I needed a whiteboard anyway. It is a bit thicker than the glass I am currently using.  Hope to try out the taulmans before monday.

Re: Nylon

I have seen home depot sell the masonite in 2x2 foot squares.

Re: Nylon

Departed, what temp are you setting your bed at?

I'm having no luck getting this stuff to stick

update:
bed at 100.  I tweaked my ztab and it seems to be holding! I also loosened my idler a bit as well.

Re: Nylon

if you use tempered masonite for your bed you should take some sandpaper (I used some 150 grit) to the surface so that the it becomes a lighter brown.

Re: Nylon

corners starting warping pretty a bit and some threads are delaminating in the corners, I think I need to change my flow multiplier.

check out the bends!  I wonder if I can print some sort of spring (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:21234 or http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:44198) to use with the zbacklash fixes.

Re: Nylon

Looks very promising! I was dying for the flex PLA, but this looks nearly as good. Seems like you should at least be able to print leaf springs.  Sweet image vid there by the way. Is that a BBcode somewhere?

made a gif with iphone app and uploaded it a host and just used the embed image button on the post toolbar.

Re: Nylon

Maybe some promise in making an accordion like top for the case. It would be useful for insulating the top and letting the Bowden style tubes feed in from the top without much kinkage. Is there clear nylon yet?

Re: Nylon

just the natural so far.

Re: Nylon

I emailed taulman to let him know that his filament is working with the stock SD end and he let me know that taulman 645 will be out soon that works at even lower temps!

the 618 is ooze city. I'm going to lower my print temp to 198 and see how it goes.

aFoote, he is super impressed with your iphone case and that bridge action.

Re: Nylon

I printed a few things from the flexible collection, I'll upload pics a little later.  I switched back over to ABS for now though.

My bed is set at 0.

I am going to run a bunch of adhesion tests today with a hot bed and see if there are any differences.

I print it at 200 and it oozes pretty bad.  Its only a problem when I start a print otherwise retraction takes care of most of it for me.

Re: Nylon

also,

When I was printing very large parts I was seeing substantial warping past about 10 layers at 100% infill.  This was with no bed heat so I will give it a try today with some heat.

I have bent this part back and fourth 100+ times now with no noticeable loss in strength.

Garolite plates show up tomorrow. The part I need can not have any warping. Got my fingers crossed.

Re: Nylon

I'm going to be lazy for once and not read the whole topic, has anyone that has printed discussed fumes or fume management yet.  I've got a clamshell of this at home but have it put aside until I can figure out how badly it's going to damage my kids if I print with it.

I notice a lot less odor with this than I do with ABS.

The odor means it's working lol

Re: Nylon

My understanding with the taulman stuff was that it was suppose to be safer than printing straight nylon. The guys I bought it from said that the toxic fumes normally associated with nylon isnt present in the filament since it's a polymer, and so no worries about fumes. But then again, they used to say vinyl fumes were harmless so who knows.

This is from the taulman site:

"Are there fumes and odors?

The taulman polyamide materials give off almost no odor as compared to ABS.  Most residual odors come from the humidity (water) that boils or steams off during printing and 618 had no measurable HCN.
When printing with ABS, Nylon, PLA or any material, we are changing the state of elements with temperature, so make sure you vent all fumes and odors."

Maybe I'll give it a try, just watch the kids for twitching or something.  smile
