Topic: Da Vinci Jr 1.0 Pro Firmware 1.0.2 problems

I'm having a problem with my Da Vinci Jr 1.0 Pro.  Every since the 1.0.2 firmware update my printer is useless.  I've had it stop in the middle of a print and pop up a message saying unfinished print detected and asked if I want to continue.  After selecting yes it will print for a few minutes and then stop and say SD card error.

I had it stop one time saying filament jam, I clicked on load filament and it fed just fine so there wasn't actually a jam.

I also randomly get an SD card error with the original SD card that came with it and never had this before the firmware update.

I've owned this printer three months and never had a single issue until this firmware update.  I believe my previous firmware was 1.0.0 and I want to revert to that one as soon as possible.

Anyone know how I can revert to the previous firmware?

Re: Da Vinci Jr 1.0 Pro Firmware 1.0.2 problems

SD card error can due to unplug SD card on computer while writing is not complete. backup file on sd card and do a quick format on computer will solve that problem.

False detection of filament jam can be caused by dusty extruder. extruder use optical senser to detect if filament ran out or filament jam, if you have many dust or broken pieces of filament that blocked the optical senser, it will become not reliable.

People usually revert to the previous firmware to be able to hack the printer, not for stability issues.

Re: Da Vinci Jr 1.0 Pro Firmware 1.0.2 problems

Thanks for the info.

There's nothing wrong with my SD card, it's been working fine.

Print head, nozzle and feeder have just been cleaned.

All of these issues started immediately after doing the firmware update.

It would not be the first time XYX has released a bad update. You will just have to wait and hope they send out a patch soon. Last time they goofed it was three months before they fixed it.

Re: Da Vinci Jr 1.0 Pro Firmware 1.0.2 problems

Da Vinci Jr 1.0 Pro. 1.0.2 firmware is released 09/18/2017, did not found any report in problems after google. Given XYZware frequent remind people to update the firmware/software, I doubt you are the first one got this update after almost one month.

If you are confident the firmware update caused it, re-download it from xyzware and try the upgrade process again. It is possible the upgrade firmware file you downloaded is incomplete or contain mistake or your USB cable not 100% reliable. I once used a long USB cable to upload .gcode file to my Da Vinci 1.0, upload works everytime, but it have to try multiple upload for the verification to pass, switched to a shorter high quality USB cable helped.

I did come across someone else that has had some of the same issues since the update. Unfortunately I cannot download the firmware, the XYZ site won't let me. It only comes down through XYZware.

The issue you are going to have is that if that was the latest version your machine updated to, you cannot downgrade. In all of the most recent updates they made it so you can'y downgrade on any of the machines. People that had other XYZ models had this same issue where the firmware would not allow them to unload filament to put in new filament. It took a month or more before XYZ acknowledged and sent out an update to fix the problem.

XYZ no longer supplies a site to download the firmware from. It has to be done through the software.  They are trying to make it as hard as possible to jail break their machines.

Even if they did have a site, it would have to the be the same version or newer version as the machine will now reject a version that it does not see as newer. Some have been able to fake out the machine by giving an older version the name of a newer version but it does not always work on all models.

Thanks for the info, I read that thread but it was posted back in April 2016.  Apparently XYZ has changed their delivery method and the firmware update only comes through the XYZware.  There is no way for me to go out and download it on my own that I know of.

Re: Da Vinci Jr 1.0 Pro Firmware 1.0.2 problems

I got home today from a trip and turned the printer on to look at something and a new issue popped up.

Before I left home I was able to print a small item that only took a couple minutes to print, when I turned my printer on this evening it said unfinished print detected and did I want to cancel or continue.

I chose cancel then it said canceling extruder but started to heat up the nozzle.  Once it reached about 185c it moved the print bed up front and said remove object.

There are some serious issues with this firmware update.

I would not go that far, XYZ product use high quality parts and most part of the hardware is well designed. The problems is they spend too much effort to close source their software and filament instead of focus on simplicity and quality of the final print. instead of make opensource software package easy to use, they have to rewrite firmware, slicer, redesign the motherboard, encrypt everything to make sure users have to buy their filament, problematic software issue is predetermined by their goal.

I have to agree their customer service is horrible too. either not helpful, or trying to sell you expensive parts.

But I still like the case and the hardware (except the hotend, E3D is way better) and the price of the machine after discount.

Re: Da Vinci Jr 1.0 Pro Firmware 1.0.2 problems

This one was given to me and it's only 3 months old so it should still be under warranty.  Sounds like the are trying to be like apple products where you can't downgrade or do any mods which I can't stand.  I will be sending it back.  Will probably get a diy printer for my next one.  The Creality CR-10 seems to be pretty good.

Unlike Da vinci printer,  Creality CR-10 use low quality electronic parts, it suffer from power supply issues. it can burn the motherboard or power supply board, but usually not your house.

Please do some research on this power supply issue and make sure you know how to fix before buy it. This is a relatively common issue with many but not all DIY 3d printer, you can totally fix it by replace it with high quality computer power supply.

All the fan are noisy by the way,  the fan for power supply in particular, but you can easily replace all the fans with super silent ball bearing fans.

Also be prepared to upgrade to dual z-axis because single z step motor may not hold long after long time printing.

Last but not least, it make big noise. Some used the word horrible.

And now you understand why I don't hate Da vinci so much.

You must have started using XYZ printers when they began to release the smaller style printers. Had you been around when the 1.0 , 2.0 and AOI was released you would not be such a supporter of XYZ regardless of reasons. When those first three large format printers where released, there was nothing good about them. Also noise level is subjective.

To put it simply what one person thinks is noisy may not be noisy to another. Such things as location of printer, other noises in area, and so on can dictate what might be acceptable in printer noise. Some have their printers in a separate workshop so a printer that sounds like a saw mill might be acceptable in that situation while other have them in their living area so they may need less noise. To just say you think a printer is noisy is not acceptable.

A more accurate method would be to get an app and use your phone and measure the actual sound pressure being generated by your printer that you call noise or quite and then compare to others that measure the same way but feel the noise is acceptable. I measured my CTC in my bedroom and it was putting out 20dB during a print. Note that normal human speech is around 75dB for comparison. My printer is not enclosed and has a metal frame.

My central air makes more noise at about 60dB than my printer does which is actually in my bedroom and runs at night sometimes. Most of printing now takes place on my SLA but I do still use the CTC for items that require less precision and less surface quality and more durability.

Re: Da Vinci Jr 1.0 Pro Firmware 1.0.2 problems

I do own a Da Vinci 1.0 with Repeti-firmware installed, E3D hotend, and replaced step driver. Besides its firmware issue and software issue, it is a solid build machine, all electronic are high quality. Major quality issue will be the shaft mount and the door.

It do generate more noise than Jr. but much quieter than 3d printer that is not enclosed. Compared side by side with MonoPrice Maker select V2. Both machine are carefully adjusted and MonoPrice Maker select V2 printed at lower speed to get permission to do the test.

we can go around the firmware issue and software issue by use open source solution, and we are talking about the first 3D printer the company designed. First iPhone don't even support copy paste!

I'm not physics major, but dB is an logarithmic unit, 80dB is not 60dB louder than 20dB.

If "was putting out 20dB during a print" means your nosie measurement increased 20dB, mathematically it means turns on your 3D printer make nosie engery around you increased to 100 times than before.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decibel

Normal central air is about 40dB, if your central air makes more noise at about 60dB than your printer, you need to get it fixed. It is basically same skill set required to fix your 3D printer, lubrication on fan motor and compressor, replace unbalanced fan blade, add noise damping and tight up vibrating parts, etc.

So far I've seen 4 or 5 other people having the same problems with the new firmware update in other threads.

OK, I don't own an Jr. Pro, and I did not get many result from internet search on Jr. Pro firmware issue, usually I would expect lots of complain on issue like this. Either Jr. Pro user are very few, or they don't upgrade their firmware, or they don't like to complain.

I think most of my comment are neutral, unbiased and unemotional. I always compare pros and cons in a fair way. If I was XYZ employee, half of the topic I posted will get me fired.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_pressure

Sound pressure level (SPL) or acoustic pressure level is a logarithmic measure of the effective pressure of a sound relative to a reference value.

Sound pressure level, denoted Lp and measured in dB
