Topic: ABS 3D Printing Market Size

Hello,

I am doing some research study on ABS 3D filament market world wide. I would like to have an understanding of the following:

1. The most popular grade of ABS resin
2. Market information such as annual ABS 3D filament production worldwide, Annual Consumption
3. Average consumer cost and average manufacturer costs
4. Expected annual growth

All are welcome to chime in.

Thanks in advance

Regards,
Nassar

Re: ABS 3D Printing Market Size

While I am not a commercial manufacturer, I make mine from home, so I can at least give you some type of info as a Filastruder user.

My preference is ABS MG94 and it costs me about $8/kg. Adding color will usually bump it by a dollar or two depending on the color. In the event I sell 1kg spool I usually charge $20-30 depending on the job since usually people ask me for custom rolls (new colors, sample, multi colored, specific diameter, polymer, etc).

I can't speak of annual growth, but I save $400-600 per year making my own filament, and probably make another $100-200 per year running custom jobs for other users.

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

Re: ABS 3D Printing Market Size

A question you should ask is the number of printers people own, and average consumption of ABS per printer. Another interesting point may be about how they are using the ABS. ie personal hobby, professional modeling, making stuff for the kids, class room, college projects ect.

give a better scope for the people who are consuming the products. I'm sure there are large production farms that are pumping out parts like Prusa, but how many of them are there? No idea.

Re: ABS 3D Printing Market Size

Thanks Azerate & Smow...

According to Wohlers report, more than 278,000 printers priced at <$5,000USD were sold in 2015. Gartner report expected around 456,000 printers sold in 2016.

I will rephrase my questions:

1. Are you 3D printing personally or professionally? What is the main usage of the prints?
2. How many KG's of ABS do you go through annually?
3. How much are you spending ($) per KG of ABS?
4. If ABS is not your choice, what would be the main printing materiel you use? (i.e. PLA, PETG?)

Many Thanks.

Re: ABS 3D Printing Market Size

  1. Personally; I mainly make parts to upgrade the machine itself (or the surrounding setup), to replace broken parts that are hard/impossible to find, to serve as new parts/tools that help around the house, or even other people, and even stuff that is simply cool or educational (I have sold a few prints).

  2. Last year ate about 12 1kg spools, and I was slacking off a bit.

  3. The spools I used last year were about $20 (from eBay), but soon my Filastruder will make spools for <$8 per kg.

  4. My main material has been ABS, but I also use PLA sometimes, and I plan to make and print with PETG filament soon. I am also interested in trying out polycarbonate, ASA, and flexible materials, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

I should mention that our neighbors are now coming to us if they need an odd part replaced/made (namely for the houses' built-in features, like the vac systems), since we both stock up on the odd stuff like fuses and short FL tubes, and can make new/unique parts in a relatively short time (unless I have to reverse-engineer it).

Filastruder 2607 w/ Filawinder @1.75mm.
Dual-extruder MaxMicron Prusa Mendel: RAMPS 1.4 w/ Repetier Firmware+Full Graphic LCD Controller, stock hotends, 3Dator extruders w/ MK8 gears, insulated enclosure w/ 2 heat lamps, RPi 2B w/ Repetier Server.
0.1-0.2mm layer height, heated bed w/ PEI surface, inductive-sensor autolevel, 0.5mm to 0.2mm nozzle diameters.
