Topic: Best open source electronics for 3D printer

I week ago I thought that I burned the Melzi based board in my Malyan M150. I have spent a whole day searching the alternative solutions I found a few that caught my eye, but what I could not find is a some kind of comparative review for the open source electronics. I did not think that I'll be needing a Smothie or a clone of it. I do not think that there is a need for an ARM based solution. When I mentioned ARM, i could not find an answer, is it possible to run Marlin on ARM based board?

The solutions that caught my eye are MakerBase MKS v1.4, Rumba and Megatronics 3.0. All three have similar functionality, all based on Mega 2560, all three can work with at least dual extruder setup. Based on appearance I like the Rumba most, but at the same time I found least information about it. So if anyone has some pointers I'll be very grateful. Klingeltone fur das iPhone

The other question is about China suppliers. While searching, on the RepRap wiki, as the author of Rumba is RepRapDiscount mentioned. It's a Chinese shop which lists Rumba for $80, and the Bigtreetech (BIQU) shop @AliExpress has the same board for almost half the price. As someone who uses various other electronics (sensors and ESP8266 boards) made by BIQU I know that they make quality products, so is there any real reason to buy Rumba from RepRapDiscount (other then to support the R&D)?

Do not get me wrong, I understand the R&D and will buy original E3D V6 hot end kit, maybe even with the Titan extruder, but on the matter of electronics, when both suppliers are from China I am confused.

As an avid fan of the Rumba, buy the original from RRD and don't cheap out on drivers either.  The DRV8825's are far superior to any clones.  I say this as both a user and seller of competing brand 8825's.  I have used and repaired many clone rumbas for users here on the forum.  It is robust and well designed.  The quality of the traces, components and soldering seems much better on the RRD Rumba.  All of that being said, if you get a good quality clone it will function the same.  RRD Rumbas are manufactured in HongKong not China, at least they used to be.

Whatever you decide to go with, there are plenty of brilliant users here willing to help.

I agree with wardjr - get the real deal.
I have 2 of them, both running Solidoodle 4's - very easy to set up and flash, and quite reliable. My #1 printer has had a genuine Rumba on it for close to 2 years now, and thousands of hours of printing. #2 was upgraded shortly after buying it.

Anytime you see a "clone" for half the cost of the original, you need to understand that there is a reason for it - usually inferior parts and/or workmanship. We see it all the time - people buy this junk, then wonder why they have so many problems with it.
What really boggles my mind is that they will keep buying the junk, over and over... 1st one fails, they buy another, then another - in the end, they could have bought the real deal for what was spent on the junk... hmm

I am new to the world of 3D printing and want to build a printer all from scratch. I've been investigating components and I'm making a list of suppliers and components to order. I saw in your posts that you recommend the original Rumba, so I should order it on this website correct? http://www.reprapdiscount.com/electroni … board.html

As for the drivers, this board is compatible with the DRV8825? Where should I order these drivers? I found it on AliExpress but these are from BIQU.

I believe the BIQU version is not the original Rumba, it is the so called clone. It is also available on amazon for similar price. Aliexpress usually take very long time for shipping (about three weeks). The BIQU clone of Rumba support  A4988, DRV8825, and TMC2100. TMC2100 is more expensive but quiet and smoother. For DRV8825, you might also search for "tl-smoother DRV8825" to fully understood the pros and cons.

If you need recommendation for the original Rumba and DRV8825, wait for others that have real experience with original Rumba, I only use clones.
