This does not make sense. Seem like very poor reporting . I am wondering what they realy had and what went wrong .  Poor or no ventilation .  no CO detector.  i find it hard to believe two MIT Grads this careless to not know what they were dealing with.

Its poor reporting. From what I read it was a laser cutter. Maybe a printer modified but still a laser cutter. A laser burns, and what do you get when something burns? Sounds to me they where just careless or had no clue what they where doing.

Coroner said no CO poisoning. Investigation showed both laser cutter and 3D printer were off at time of entry.

Re: 3D printer tragedy ??

I have heard of a 3D printer giving of toxic fumes from which ever plastic it is printing with (e.g ABS) but I have never heard one giving off Carbon Monoxide. (surely it would have to be on fire to do this).

As you're not from the UK, I thought you should know that the Daily Mail isn't a credible news source. All their articles are designed to shock or outrage their readers - older, conservative people - facts rarely come into it.
