Topic: XYZ Da Vinci Jr/Mini - Printing with Simplify3D

I had asked the folks at Simplify3D if their software worked with the XYZ Da Vinci miniMaker and if their software would allow us to use generic PLA filament and not XYZ’s proprietary filament since the XYZware checks for their filament before printing. I could never get them to give me an answer.

First reply:

Hi Bob,

We actually have this exact same printer in our office that we have used with Simplify3D many times, so it is definitely supported. If you want advice about what exact settings to use, please let me know after you purchase and I can send you a copy of my latest settings.

When I asked again about the alternate filaments, this was their reply:

Hi Bob,

I know we have many users who use alternate filaments on the machine, but I'm sure it can depend on the specific firmware version you are using as well. It may be best to ask other XYZ users to see what modifications were required to run alternate filaments with the machine, as I know we have many users who have done exactly this.

Is anyone using Simplify3D software and if so do we have the same restrictions with this software? If I knew it would work without the NFC tag check I would spend the $149.

Re: XYZ Da Vinci Jr/Mini - Printing with Simplify3D

i use it and the supports are fantastic well worth the money to not ruin your print because you needed supports. The filament check has NOTHING to do with the software you are using though. thats all checked on the printer its self.

everything from the configuration of supports, types on infill's, calibrations, everything is better in simplify3D. It auto arranged your print to fit the bed etc.

but that wont fix your filament issue. Have to do a ramps conversion if you want to get rid of the filament check

Re: XYZ Da Vinci Jr/Mini - Printing with Simplify3D

My guess would be the Jr. Settings will work for the mini. As for alternative filaments the host which is what Simplify3d is will have no control of that The NFC confirmation is done at a Firmware level. The only way around is to edit the tags as they do with the Jr. Or gut the machine and convert it to Ramps 1.4 or other controller of choice.

You load filament through the LCD controls on the printer. Again that is not a function of the host, but the printer.

Re: XYZ Da Vinci Jr/Mini - Printing with Simplify3D

I am using Simplify3d with a da vinci Jr.  I have only been 3d printing for 2 weeks now, so take that into consideration.  The trick for me was setting the speed down.  After decrypting the sample file that came on the sd card with threedubber and comparing their gcode with what simplify3d was outputting I noticed that the speed was more than double.  I set the default printing speed to 800 mm/min and finally got some successful prints.  I also have the first layer set at 25% speed, this matches about the speed that their sample file had.

The issue I am running into, is that the fan always seems to run on the first layer regardless of what I set, but I have had successful prints so far.

Re: XYZ Da Vinci Jr/Mini - Printing with Simplify3D

I tried to print on the mini with S3D, and I can connect to the printer just fine. But when I send to the printer via USB the mini's LED becomes red and it won't print. S3D will also keep saying: starting build.

Any idea what is causing this?
