Topic: Which Slicer do you use Which is your preference and why?

As the title suggests. I'm curious as to which Slicer you guys n girls use. Personally, I,m using Cura in Repetier host. However I'm an 8 month noob so I'm a bit naive with regards to the other options I have. Is Cura a good choice? I see the options are limited in Repetier Host compared to the standalone Cura. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.

Re: Which Slicer do you use Which is your preference and why?

I have been at this hobby for about 2 1/2 years. Have done a lot of home work.
I use rh and slic3r most of the time . I like it and prefer it.  however there have been some files that I have run across that just would not slice with slic3r or would not fully print. Think headless poodle.
ran the same file though the cura in rh and worked better . I say better because i had to learn to tune the cura software. So i personally am more comfortable with and prefer Slic3r.

ON the flip side I have a friend who owns a 3d printing and filament store . I consider him a real expert in 3d printing. He is a big Ultimaker fan and Ultimaker dealer. He uses cura and teaches cura.
He also sells simpilfy3D  software . this would be a third choice.

The question you present is akin to is ford or Chevy better or Windows vs Mac OS.    They both do basically do the same thing. Function and design similar . but controls are a bit different and the feel is different.

IMHO it comes down to what system you learned first and were taught on. Why do you think software companies give deep  educationa discounts or free licences on  software.

So yes cura is a good choice as is simlify 3d or slic3r. Another one that has a good rep is craftware . I have a copy but have not messed with it much. Have yet to do a print with it.   ulitmatley  you need to decide what is best for you . There have been several articles on the web on this subject . Do a google search and they will pop up. Toms guides revues seem to be a good source of info and an honest independent review.

Interesting discussion here but My understanding net fab and octoprint while are great 3d printing software they are NOT slicers .

Re: Which Slicer do you use Which is your preference and why?

I constantly bounce back and forth between Slic3r and Cura.  They each handle support structures and complex geometry somewhat differently, so I'll often slice an object in each one, and choose whichever result I like best.

Simplify 3d here.. I like the speed and it seems to manage some objects the others gave up on. I used ti use Cura stand alone exclusively but it does not seem to get along with my current printer as well for some reason.

prefer Slic3r here...

like Tin Falcon said - it boils down to personal preferences and what you learned with.. just like the Ford/Chevy/Dodge thing.. or the Windows/Mac thing...

I have Simplify3D but don't care for it - mainly because I don't know it that well.
Tried Cura once - just could not make heads or tails of the settings so went back to Slic3r.

I use it primarily through Repetier Host, but occasionally fire up the stand alone for those "special needs" prints, then export the g-code to RH for printing.

Re: Which Slicer do you use Which is your preference and why?

As mentioned before I mostly use  slic3r. slicer you set number of perimeters and number of top and bottom layers . Cura you set thicknesses in mm. Slicer allows for honeycomb infill  and some other fancy patterns . IMHO honeycomb makes sense . There are different settings and different terms in the various programs  so a bit of a learning curve to translate.  A lot of it is which one makes the most sense to use.

Re: Which Slicer do you use Which is your preference and why?

I will tell you the one to avoid. Skeinforge, that slicer is so old and the terminology it uses just does not line up with anything else in the industry. Many years ago it was the goto, and I don't think much has changed about it.

Slic3r mainly.. simplify3D when i need support structure (rarely) as it's the better for that...

We currently use Cura 2.3. Although there may be better slicers around, Cura is really easy to use and free.

Re: Which Slicer do you use Which is your preference and why?

Slic3r, since I have it tuned to my printer, but neither Cura nor Slic3r have produced a dual extrusion gcode that cooperates with my printer, sadly.

Re: Which Slicer do you use Which is your preference and why?

Lot of interesting ideas here. At the minute im trying to set up Simplify3d but it doesnt seem that simple to me. Lol. I have just posted a question in this section. If anyone with any experience with S3d could maybe provide any help id sure appreciate it. Would love to get my teeth into this software. Heard lots of good things about it.
