Topic: Alternative software for Da Vinci Jr 1.0?

So I just got my first 3d printer for Christmas and it's the Da Vinci Jr 1.0. While I've had some nice success with some small prints and one large, I'm still trying to figure out and learn everything about printing. And I'm definitely quickly learning the limitations of this particular printer. Specifically when it comes to file types and slicers. Now the models I've printed up to now have been pretty basic. I just got an STL and sliced it/exported it to a 3w via XYZMaker and it printed just fine. However, now that I'm looking into new stuff to work on and test, I'm starting to run into barriers.

I'm mainly having issues with the file type limitations. The fact that the printer doesn't recognize g-code is causing some grief when messing with supports. I've done A LOT of reading and I've tried making my edits through Slic3r and that running the exported g-code through the XYZWare Mod, but the pretty doesn't recognize the 3w file. I used XYZMaker just fine at first but now that I'm reading about supports, infill % and pattern, etc., XYZMaker can't do any of that. It can't even rotate your model.

So my question is for more experienced user of this printer, what do you use to work with you prints?

The truth is you are seeing the limit of the printer as is.. If you wish to get more options available you will need to convert it to an open source controller like RAMPS or other choice and then you can run any host on it and have access to all the settings you need. Simplify 3d is supposed to support the JR as well but it is not free and will set you back $150 USD. Checkout their site if you are curious about it. If it does support the JR then it will do most of the stuff you want.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!
Anycubic 4MAX best $225 ever invested.
Voxelabs Proxima SLA. 6 inch 2k Mono LCD.
Anycubic Predator, massive Delta machine. 450 x 370 print envelope.

That's what I was afraid of....

I've reading about Simplify3d and a couple versions ago they added support. It's just hard for me to drop that kind of money without really knowing how well it supports the printer. If it does have nice support, it would be worth it in the long run as it'll support most printers for when I eventually upgrade. I'll keep researching for now and I'm testing XYZMaker's support option now so we'll see how that goes lol

Anyway thanks for the clarifications Carl smile

Check this thread out: http://www.soliforum.com/topic/15639/jr … -threedub/

You can print with much finer detail, faster speeds. gives you a lot more control over the print. ( I had to adjust my z axis to get it printing nice but now it is fantastic)

People have printed  at 0.06 & 0.04 and have had great high quality prints, you do need to slow the speed right down and increase the temp.

You use Cura to set all the slicing settings then use Threedubber to convert gcode to.3w, Threedubber may be able to convert Gcode from other programs too, but I have not done that so not sure.

Also take a look at my simple printed mods to improve reliability and performance:

Hope this helps smile
