Topic: Glitter/Multi Color

Howdy

I received my Struder the other day, and will be building it over the next week or so, one question that I wanted to ask is, Multi Color ABS and Glitter inside of the ABS..

I want to make a multi color ABS (eg, green/blue/red/white etc) I have masterbatch pellets of said colors, I am just wondering (as i havent tried it yet) to make multi color, would you put in a few grams of each color (up to the mix ratio for the product you want to extrude) and then give it a shake, and let it extrude? Will this have the color set for whatever comes through (eg some pure abs, then some master batch pellets, go to the melt zone, then extrude?) This leads to another question when it comes to masterbatch pellets and raw resin, how do you ensure consistent color (depth I supoose for want of a better word?)

The next one is, I want to make some ABS/PLA Yellow with Glitter in it, as my son is mad about lego, and I think the effect would be great, I've ordered some metalic glitter (will see how course it is) (hardened nozzle will be used as it would wear out a brass? ??) of various tints,  I am guessing you would mix in with the raw material, the yellow master batch, and give it a good shake to coat everything then extrude?

Sorry for the newbie quetsions, just has me thinking!

Re: Glitter/Multi Color

I've made several multi-colored rolls for clients and the trick is to pour in a small amount per color/ratio, then once all pellets have cleared the hopper and are in the chute, pour in around 20g of virgin pellets to purge before the next ratio. Once the virgin pellets have entered the chute, add in the next ratio. This is much easier to obtain with far more consistent coloring with powder based colorants....I've done several reviews on said powders in the DIY Filament Materials section of the forum.
Masterbatch is just a colorant, so you do not want to just dump that in. Whether you use masterbatch or powder, you want to blend them together evenly before dumping it into the hopper. This blend is the aforementioned filament/colorant ratio.

There was some chatter about glitter and metallic powder infused filament off a Filastruder, but I do not believe anyone has tried it yet. When you feel comfortable and brazen enough to test it, most of us would recommend you contact elmoret for safe guidance. Oh....and post with updates! smile

Be really curious to know how well that works, could look amazing.

Re: Glitter/Multi Color

Probably not too relevant since no one has posted trying to make any, but I contact Proto-Pasta to see if they would make a 'gold' version of their glitter HTPLA for my wedding, thinking it's as easy as adding a different color glitter. They mentioned that they use a chrome glitter to get their level of sparkle and that other glitters didn't shine as much.
