Topic: Blower with straw

Here is a idea that cooling blower build with flexible straws. It originated from the limit space of my SD2 pro, which difficult to mount blower. I tried the 2 in 1 fan duct for E3D, but it seems not work well for me. I mounted a 5 cm turbo fan on the top of extruder stepper, and use of full flexible straws as fan duct.

Re: Blower with straw

the only problem with corrugated tubing is the turbulence it creates. Itll slow the airflow down. Thats why on turbos and super chargers for engines you need smooth tubing

Re: Blower with straw

Have you checked the air volume coming from the straws?  I would guess it is almost nothing.  The problem is you have to use a gradual reduction in diameter or back pressure will build up which will obstruct air flow.  There is a reason you don't see this design in use.  Those fans and straws have been around a long time.  If this where a viable solution it would have been put on production machines some time ago.

And the question nobody has asked yet... How well is it working for you compared to what you were doing before?

Re: Blower with straw

Kronikabuse: Indeed, that's a consideration. I also think about the loc-line type fan duct, but it seems like has the same issue?

carl_m1968: I have no way to measure the air volume for now (may be I will figure it out someday). But I'm sure that some air comes out of straw.

danlsam: The 1st pic is the comparison of 0.5 mm calibration prints with/without air cooling (PLA). It seems worked to solve my collapsing problem of PLA printing. The fan/fanduct in the front of 2nd pic is my previous cooling method, sometimes really awkward.

Re: Blower with straw

This is very nice, though overkill IMHO
Aciddoblue is obviously using Lawsy's carriages which have a printed nozzle mount for the underside of the X carriage here
In his/hers defense, you don't need much airflow to impact layers; especially with PLA and no enclosure. So corrugated tubing isn't the best option for very fine prints, but it will still help.

With Aciddoblue having only two posts and a heavily modified printer, I would like to say welcome to the forum!!
