Topic: Thymark shredder lookalike motor size?

Hi.

I just bought a shredder off ebay, size 120x150 and i was thinking of using a small motor with gearbox i had.

The motor is a parvalux 1/4 hp with a 6rpm gearbox. I ran the shredder on the gearboxshaft direct.
But the motor is way to weak. It wont even shred 1mm thick plastic without bogging.

What kind of power is recommended for it to be useful?
1HP 5HP ?

Do you have a link to the shredder,

Re: Thymark shredder lookalike motor size?

just search.

It is NOT a copy of thymarks/filamaker. It was based on a much bigger thing, and does not look the same.

I actually wanted to buy a filamaker, but the selling reasons were absurd to me.
Only companies can buy a bare shredder, private persons must buy a complete machine with casing and hopper
for a ridiculous price (for that price i would expect a geared motor be included in the price).
And also no paypal payment wich also is really stupid.

Hmm, I searched a bit and couldn't find it. If you could provide a link I'd be happy to comment about likely power/torque needs.

Search for industrial shredder on ebay uk.

here is a videolink of it running.

He say he use a 1.25kw motor with 50rpm gearbox. That is way to fast, and probably also to big motor.

Re: Thymark shredder lookalike motor size?

I got a bunch of motors with gearboxes, a couple of vfd's, a couple of motorcouplers for a sweet price yesterday.
I payed half of what one vfd costs new. And these WERE new, both motors and vfd's.

1 really small motor 24v with gearbox, 1 small 220v motor+gear, 1 220/380v 3 phase with planetary gearbox 50rpm and one big 220/380v 3 phase with gearbox 30rpm.
1 220v singlephase vfd with 3phase out, 2 pcs 3 phase.

I am going to use the one with planetary gearbox with the 220v vfd. Tested it seems to be ok power from it, and a plus is i can regulate the speed and rotation direction with the vfd.

I love VFD's smile running one on my extruder to vary speed.

UPDATE: the grey planetary was not enough sad Next try is the blue 0.55kw (0.75hp) one.

Re: Thymark shredder lookalike motor size?

I'm  running my shredder with a 300w  screwed output dc motor, I think they were for golf carts.
I run it off a 48volt cheapo Chinese power supply. If it blows you just get another.
I reduce the speed by industrial chain 18:76 sprocket. For harder shredding I have a 9 tooth sprocket. Using an arduino with relay motor reversal by current measurement, to do the usual shredder jamming reversal action.
