Topic: PLA Breaking when printer sits?

As mentioned before I tend to use the inland brand of PLA from micro center . I am down to the last couple hundred grams or less of a roll of blue.  if i let it sit on the printer I have several breaks in the filament. The filament is a bit coiled . I am printing fine as we speak . If I have to trash the last few wraps on the roll it would not be a catastrophic loss . And it is probably my fault for not bagging the rol when I am not printing. and this roll is likely close to a year old.  Just curious if this is a common problem or me living between a bay and an ocean and not storing filament in a dry enough environment.

Re: PLA Breaking when printer sits?

Hi Tin,

What you are experiencing is fairly common. The problem can be made worse by the conditions the printer is kept in. For example, if there is a lot of moisture in the air then this can cause the filament to become brittle and break.

Storing the filament carefully (e.g in an airtight container) will help. Also if you unwind those last few coils of filament and then leave them on their own (in the airtight container) then they should become less tightly coiled and you may experience fewer breaks.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Re: PLA Breaking when printer sits?

3Dex thanks.
Maybe someone can help with an idea for AIR Tight container.
I know from experience ziplock bags help but are not real air  vapor tight.

I handle desiccant packs on a regular basic the only thing that is air tight from my experience is a plastic bag inside a metal container like a paint can. I keep as many rolls as I can in old cookie cans.and zip lock bags around the filament roll but I more rolls than cans.
I guess i need to search thrift stores for more cookie containers.
I would love to have a environmentally controlled room but not realistic.

In reality the filament has worked well for the money no real complaints . I ran off a half dozen prints last evening to real problems just needed to help the roll unwind as i went.
This is joisey it is never a DRY heat.

Re: PLA Breaking when printer sits?

I use these with Damp-rid inside...

https://www.amazon.com/Quart-Ziploc%C2% … B00MWTJXP0

I have 4 of the largest ones with filament in them (2 ABS, 1 PLA & 1 misc) and a couple of the smaller ones that have spare parts in them. they are great. smile

Re: PLA Breaking when printer sits?

while out and about I picked up a couple refill bags of damp rid. Looks like it is basically calcium chloride aka sidewall salt. but a little research reveals it is a better desiccant.

Re: PLA Breaking when printer sits?

I was wondering has anyone here set up an enclosure to hold filament and desiccant to protect from moisture while printing??

should not be difficult to build  .
something like this

Re: PLA Breaking when printer sits?

i swap colors far too frequently for something like that to be useful to me. If you only use 1 or 2, it may be something you might want, but me? nope.

If I simply remember to unload the hotend when I am done for the day, and put the spool away in one of the containers, I dont have any issues with moisture. Nylon is an absolute MUST to get put away when done with it. PLA & ABS, eh, I might leave them out for a couple of days at a time if I will be using them. If it isnt going to get used for a while, it gets put away

Re: PLA Breaking when printer sits?

The storage tubs arrived today.
two of the six latches on one of the large tubs were broken off and laying in the tubs.

And I find the boxes are not manufactured or sold by Zip LOc they are made By Iris USA.
So need to get a e mail off to them.

Re: PLA Breaking when printer sits?

yeah, definitely email them - if they were labeled as ZipLoc when you placed your order then they are illegally switching products.

We actually bought ours locally, but the store has since stopped carrying the largest ones.

Well not exactly the Ziploc product Brand name is owned by SC Johnson  IIRC also know as Johnson wax. SC Johnson has some sort of agreement with Iris USA  to make these boxes with the Ziplock label, Weathertight is a trade mark of Iris USA.
So these boxes are sold under the iris label the ziplock label and the Remington label.
the Boxes I received have the Ziploc label  but Ziplock customer service passed me off to Iris CS. Iris CS is not answering there phone. As they close the offices @ 4pm CST

Re: PLA Breaking when printer sits?

Last Thursday I filled out the contact form on the Iris USA web page . No response yet. The customer service page states. Damage within 60 days of purchase is the sellers responsibility. So I probably could get a refund from Walmart.  an exchange would not be convenient.  Looks like i am on my own.  And it would be so simple to send a couple handles. I have not given up yet. But dare not hold breath. There are some things I have learned do not order mail order and get shipped to the house  . This item is added to the list.

Re: PLA Breaking when printer sits?

InlandPLA is iffy at best. Their ABS is much better, but still "meh" compared to Filastruder/Filawinder quality.
And sorry it took so long to jump in on this thread.
Here's my PLA comparison...granted, it is on separate mahines, extruder setups, and so on. But I never updated or too pics of opposite trials.

To add, the most brittle PLA I have ever used (the most brittle of all time in my case) is Proto Pasta's SS PLA as it would break even mid print. Look for my review a few posts down.
PLA is very bitchy, even with a good brand. Proto Pasta was the most notorious for breaking, but since they rely on PLA-based filament exclusively, that comparison goes out the window with other brands, especially since they focus on exotics.

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

Re: PLA Breaking when printer sits?

Like I said have been mosey happy with inland brand . Bottom line i need to manage storage/ Moisture control better and Probably order some filament from Makergeeks in Springfield MO.
Thanks for the input.

Re: PLA Breaking when printer sits?

I take for granted that I live in California. I treat my PLA just like I used to treat my ABS. I just leave it on the spool on the side of my printer until it's time for a new one : )

Today  I received a response from Iris USA a small envelope with 4 blue latches .  Customer service is a live and well after all.
