Topic: Left side carriage needs fixing - who's been there?

A few months ago I found a small piece of toothed black plastic in the bottom of the printer. Turns out one of the 2 belt clips on the left side carriage has snapped off. As result there is some belt slop on that side and carriage looseness front to back. I can't see how to get in there without large disassembly - also there isn't enough plastic to glue it back. Ideas?

And while I was staring at it today pondering a fix, a small flat white piece of plastic about 1cm x 3cm x 0.5mm fell out of the carriage. I thought it was a piece of a print but it isn't - looks like a shim or slider. Now there is more carriage looseness - it moves up and down a bit.

So:
Any tips on getting in there?
Any tips on fixes?

thanx in advance

I'm in a similar boat with needing to know how to remove the carriage...
