Topic: Firmware 1.x on Da Vinci 1.0A

After researching that one could hack the cartridge system for the Da Vinci I settled on buying one.  It is decent hardware especially for the price.  The problem I am having is that I have a very new printer (as of may 2016) which has the latest firmware (2.something).  This firmware won't allow changing the print bed temp or nozzle temp.  Is there a way to downgrade the firmware one a 1.0A (not a 1.0)?  If no one knows how, does anyone have the 1.x firmware for the Da Vinci 1.0A?

I enjoy having a warranty but will resort to anything to achieve my goals.

Flash it with repetier, then you can use whatever temps and slicer you want.
Not to mention the increase in print quality and reduced noise from the steppers .....

Re: Firmware 1.x on Da Vinci 1.0A

Agreed.  I tried to keep mine stock until out of warranty.  I lasted 2-3 weeks, but couldn't deal with the stock firmware anymore.  Believe it or not, there is a "self-destruct" signal built in the the firmware (kind of).  If it detects that the cartridge has been reset, it lets you keep printing, but lowers the extrusion multiplier after a few layers, so all you get is brittle, crappy prints.

The main warranty you will need is on the bed, steppers, and extruder... and they are only warrantied for 3 months!  Guess when my extruder died?  (about 4 months).

That having been said, I have done 2 RMA's through XYZ printing since flashing repetier (glass bed, x-axis tension).  They don't care what firmware you are on unless you are trying to swap out the main board.  And if you need to do that, I would imagine you could just reset the board and have nothing flashed on it at all...

Good points.  May I ask what the process was for replacement parts?  Did you just troubleshoot it over the phone and they send the parts out?  Or was it a process of sending the entire printer back?

Re: Firmware 1.x on Da Vinci 1.0A

My experience is in the US, I'm not sure where you are.

First and foremost, email is WORTHLESS.  Don't email XYZ or you will never hear anything back.

Phone is ok, but the language barrier makes it difficult.

Use this forum to figure out what is wrong.  Troubleshooting is not really anything I have experienced with XYZ.

Register your printer through their service portal online.  Once you know the part you need, you just send them a picture of your broken part, and they send you a new one.  Usually about a week from email to part in hand.

Again, this is all through their online service portal.

There are LOTS of complaints about their lack of customer service, but it has been ok for me.

Just an FYI:

My 1.0a with repetier and an E3D V6/Titan combo ($550) prints just as well, or better, than my buddy's $1100 Orion Delta!!

Re: Firmware 1.x on Da Vinci 1.0A

I have not yet flashed my Da Vinci.  I have prepared to do so.  I have not done it because I can't have the thing down right now.  We are in the middle of a big project and I must be able to print flexible filament.  My main concerns are about the settings of any new slicer.  I have read it could take weeks to dial all the settings in.  Has anyone experienced this?  Are there default settings out there currently?  Would a slicer such as Simplify3D help?  It seems like good software but I would want to know anyone's opinion who has used it.

Simplify3d is the best, imho. Super fast slicing and great print quality.
It will take some time to get the right print settings for your machine but I wouldn't say it takes weeks. Maybe a few days at most. Each machine is different and might take a bit more or less time.

The latest version of repetier is compatible with the 1.0A so it must be possible.

You have heard wrong.  My 1.0a was flashed 2 weeks into ownership.

The 1.0a cannot be flashed BACK to stock, so it is a one-way road (that you will never look back upon and regret!)

Re: Firmware 1.x on Da Vinci 1.0A

I haven't touched this in forever.  I got the project done I needed so it wasn't pressing.  I will be doing another run here soon.  I still would prefer if I could keep this stock until I can have more time to fiddle with it.  I do agree the repetier looks like the best idea but I won't want to make the leap of faith just yet.  I found what is reported to be the original 1.x firmware for the da vinci.  I want to attach it to this post but I see no option.  Does anyone have a clue as to how I would get this onto my 2.x firmware Da Vinci 1.0A?

Re: Firmware 1.x on Da Vinci 1.0A

There are original FW posted in various spots.  Ignore them.  The 1.0a cannot be "downgraded" like the 1.0.

Re: Firmware 1.x on Da Vinci 1.0A

Flashed mine right after I bought it! Reading this forum, it did not take much to convince me I needed to go with Repetier.92  So that is the route I took. The best thing I've ever done for this printer besides adding a second "hot end" for exotic filaments.
