Topic: E3D V7 wishlist

Speculation time.  I'm sure there will eventually be a new flagship hot end from E3D.  My V6 is a great product but everything gets upgraded eventually.  What would you like to see in a V7?  My only complaint is that the thermistor is pretty tedious to assemble properly and is prone to failure if not carefully strain protected.  Perhaps they could find a way to address that without affecting accuracy or response times.  There would be no real benefit in reducing the size of the heater block or heat sink, IMO.  Just curious on other people's thoughts.

Thermistor is going to be addressed in the next 6 weeks or so. It will be a cartridge based thermistor, like this:

Along with it, there will be a silicone heaterblock cover available:

Both of the above will be fully reverse compatible with v6 heatbreaks/heatsinks. The "v6" lives on, I have not heard plans for a "v7".

Wow, thanks for the info!  How is it secured to the heater block?  Press in and friction?  And is that a different heater block than the current one?  I don't see the hole for the screw that holds the old thermistor in.  The heater block insulator is interesting too.  I guess it somewhat helps it maintain a steady temp.  Also keeps some mess off your heater block but I stopped worrying about that a long time ago.  Colors other than baby blue would be nice.  I can't resist having the latest so I'm sure I'll pick these up when available.

The thermistor cartridge is held in my a grub screw from the side. These heater blocks are the same as what is currently used for PT100 sensors:

The insulator is there for keeping polymer off the heater block and keeping print cooling fans from influencing the temperature of the heater block. Additionally it eliminates thermal radiation from the heater block, improving things like bridging, overhangs, and small features in PLA.

Hopefully its a little cheaper than the PT100 sensor, $45 seems kinda steep.  Will you also offer a version of the V6 full kit that comes with these new parts instead of the old ones, or gotta buy a regular kit and add on the new parts?

The insulator sounds awesome especially for people switching materials and stressing their machine's speed capabilities with PLA. Certainly seems like E3D is trying to fine tune for a full spectrum.

Well the $45 you mention includes a PT100 sensor (capable of 400C), PT100 amplifier board, and the heater block. In your case you'd only need a thermistor cartridge (price TBD, but likely $5-10) and the heater block ($18).

Once these parts are released, all v6 kits (at least the ones I sell) will be with the new parts  by default.

Is there an advantage to the cartridge based thermistor as opposed to the M3 standoff mounted thermistors?

Cartridge based thermistors are more accurate, as they are not affected by ambient temperatures or airflow from cooling fans.

This setup E3D is moving to is also less expensive to manufacture as compared to maintaining two block types (cartridge based PT100 and screw in based thermistor blocks).

Finally the epoxy in those screw in thermistors starts to degrade over 260C, contrary to the optimistic ratings on the page.

I was actually thinking to make one for myself using silicone rated for over 285 C or thermal cement for even higher (not sure about thermal conductivity though). But I can see a cartridge being more accurate since it wouldn't be exposed.

I'm kind of surprised they are keeping the V6 name with these changes.  It seems like a fairly big change and if they started calling it the V7 then many the people with a V6 would suddenly feel the need to upgrade just to keep up, haha.  I would think they make more money.

Also, is the volcano heater block being upgraded to take the the new thermistor too?

E3D tends to sit on the other side of the fence, rather than renaming something to compel folks to upgrade, they'd rather rename when there's significant functionality differences. v5->v6 was a nearly full redesign, as almost every part was different dimensionally than before. This is just the heater block.

Yes, cartridge based thermistor will be used on Volcano. There will also be silicone boots available for Volcano as well.

Bump for idea: they should make the heater blocks able to take the heater and thermistor cartridges from either side.  The heater cartridge already works like this but I haven't seen the new thermistor insert place in detail.  I'm looking at dual extrusion setups and it would be nice to have both blocks orientated the same way with wires coming out each respective sides, without crossing over the heater blocks on one side.

I use automotive silicone gasket maker     temperature up to 300 deg 
it seals the block for heat loss and it also holds the thermistor in position. Great product

Note also that new hotends will ship with these as of today.

These are really nice, I've been using them for a couple months now actually as a beta tester. Better than the "stud" style thermistors as these are good to 295C, and fully encapsulated by the heater block for more accurate sensing.

Boots are still a few weeks out.
