Re: Cool NASA models

Thanks for sharing.
IIRC i came across those  at least some of them a couple years ago when starting this hobby.
The viking lander even has printing and assembly instructions.

The smithsonian Institute also has the X3d Project

The metropolitan museum of art  NYC  has a couple dozen files on thingiverse. .

http://www.thingiverse.com/met/designs

IMHO Making such files public is a great educational tool. Making  or printing a model  of things like space craft , landing sites and artifacts creates understanding and enthusiasm for space exploration.

3d printing allows us to relicate museum exhibits that may be thousands of miles away. so we can see things that are far far away . And we can touch what we make . We would likely never be able to touch the real thing . And even if we could one would have to wear gloves.

Digital files that are meant for viewing allow a perspective that even a visit to the museum would not reveal.

The digital age is bringing art history and science within the grasp of many who would otherwise be out of reach from these things.

This is a trend I expect to see grow as 3d scanning and printing become more accessible and affordable.

I  expect other museums and government agencies offer similar programs.

The franklin institute is offering 3d printing workshops.

Re: Cool NASA models

Yeah, I'm looking forward to printing the moon in luminous filament. I agree about all you said, Tin, and would include the emergence of VR. BTW, are you related to Rin Tin Tin?

The Tin falcon moniker is from my days as a Aircraft structural Mec/ and machinist welder  on the fighting falcon. I still enjoy metalworking and I am blessed to see real falcons many days driving to and from work.

I want to go on a journey 20,000 LEagues Under The Sea and From THe Earth To The Moon.

I remember the 20000 leagues ride at disney and IIRC the spaceship earth simulates some space travel.

May be just a matter of time before Imax type films will be played on VR goggles.

Re: Cool NASA models

The Falcon was/is a beautiful airplane. Of course, so is the Tomcat and the Hornet. And the Fighting Overrun or whatever they call the new one. Not the one they built for billions, then scrapped, the one that is actually starting to see service.

My dad was an aircraft mechanic in WWII and I grew up on an airbase in the fifties, loving T-6s, T-28s, C-47s and the occasional P-40 or P-51 that might come through. I "flew" a Link trainer when I was four and sat in the cockpit of many a fine prop job. TO this day, my heart thrills to the sound of propellers droning across the afternoon sky or a big four engine Constellation or B-17 taking off. Music, man, it is pure music.

Re: Cool NASA models

Those would look good in bronze or stone filament.
