Topic: pre-dyed nylon filament?

has anyone tried any of the colored nylon filament?

if so, what brand?
what was your experience with it?
good? bad? so-so?

just looking for information, if anyone has any to share.

Thanks in advance

Re: pre-dyed nylon filament?

ok, so I am going to take it after 30 views no one has any 1st hand experience with the stuff.

I think I am going to have to pass on even trying it as the few reviews I have found (LD brand) dont sound very good.

Re: pre-dyed nylon filament?

I had gotten a 20lb sample of pre dyed nylon from a manufacturer and it has been fantastic.  Not the same brand as what you linked though.

cmcc - what brand was it? just out of curiosity..

I ended up buying a spool of dark blue nylon from 3DXTech - 0.5kg for $28. Received it Monday, did some test prints with it yesterday after calibrating. Not bad stuff.

Extruder temp 261C
Bed temp 102C
used the Elmer's purple glue stick and it stayed down fine.

first test piece...

and a larger one in progress - turned out fine...

has a matte finish to it, not shiny at all

Re: pre-dyed nylon filament?

ok, so it looks like I need to do some more testing of the 3DXTEch nylon - I dont think I had it hot enough for the larger piece.

the part looked great, but a simple twist resulted in  some layer delamination - a little more pressure and it snapped. sad kind of disappointed right now.

Re: pre-dyed nylon filament?

More heat and most likely a little slower.  You might also want to play with sligty lower layer heights.

Printit Industries Model 8.10 fully enclosed CoreXY, Chamber heat
3-SD3's & a Workbench all fully enclosed, RH-Slic3r Win7pro, E3D V6, Volcano & Cyclops Hot End
SSR/500W AC Heated Glass Bed, Linear bearings on SS rods. Direct Drive Y-axis, BulldogXL

Re: pre-dyed nylon filament?

Hi
Albeit not quite as dramatic, we will get similar results if we use too low of a melt temps when printing with the iOn™ Nylon Alloy.  Our recommended range is 240- 270 (or higher) depending upon the extruder and results you're getting on the print.   260c sounds like it should be fine, but it looks like your not getting good remelt / bonding (obviously), which is typically a result of low temps...  Let us know if you have any other issues, at [email protected].

Re: pre-dyed nylon filament?

Thanks 3DXTech for the info - the website states "240-260, higher if possible" - since this was a test of the material, I am still sorting out what temps are going to work well for the intended pieces.

the smaller piece I did seems to be fine with the 261C temp - but being smaller, it wouldn't have as much time to cool between layers.
the larger piece definitely appears to need higher temps (will be testing again later today)

It's OEM from an extrusion company. It has my website/company info on the spool but once the sample runs out I have to order 1000lbs at a time to get more so I've just been saving it for my own use.

Re: pre-dyed nylon filament?

oh, ok.

so increasing the hotend temp did help a great deal - kicked it up to 270 for the large part and the layers seem to be bonded well at this temp.

Unfortunately, my #1 printer is down right now with a bad bearing - if it isnt one thing it is something else. tongue

the good news is, #2 is up and running fine... biggest difference is it seems to want about 5 degrees hotter (give or take a little)
Have run several smaller pieces on it to get a feel for the temp needs and am running the same large piece now... keep the fingers crossed! hotend is set to 277C! so far, so good...
