It's a shame simplify3d doesn't have a trial version.  It would be really tempting to buy it if it really works as well as you guys are reporting.

Buy it.  If you spend a week with it and aren't convinced it was worth it, I'll buy your license from you.

So rather new to 3d printing, but how does Simplify3D compare to other software like RH and Slic3r?

I can't compare it directly to RH and Slic3r because I haven't used them extensively since I got S3D.  But I will say this, I was using both RH and Slic3r before I got S3D and I found the following to be true:
Comparitively, I got better prints with less work, faster.
Comparitively, it feels simpler to use.

It's a more refined as a piece of software.
It's stable.
You have a more granular level of control. Example, I have a model with some small, narrowing features towards the top of my model.  So, in S3D, I have two or three profiles for vertical sections where the printer prints gradually slower to maintain the finish quality I want.  When I discovered this, I was blown away.

I've used it almost a full year now and I know there is more quality to extract from the software.  You won't be disappointed.

I just downloaded S3D for the press and its not listed under printers. What settings are you guys running the press under?

Re: Initial Issues with the SD Press & How to Fix Them.

I'd like to try S3D. But there isn't a trial/demo available. Not willing to drop the coin on something that I can't even try out/look at. *Shrug*

SD Press - v1 (Pre-order) / RAMPs /w DRV8825's / Cyclops (25w) / Dual Bowden / Mk8 Gear / MK2b PCB Heat bed /w custom replacement Z / PEI Bed
SD2 / E3D v6 / Direct Drive / Mk8 Gear / RAMBo v1.3 / PEI Bed / Anti Z backlash mod / Ikea Expedite enclosure.
Both Driven by Octoprint (devel) via a RPi B+ / Neopixel status alerts / GPIO Controlled SSR / (SD2) 450 Watt PSU for remote power-up/shutdown.

It's a good slicer but unless you need one of its features specifically I'd say save your money.

Re: Initial Issues with the SD Press & How to Fix Them.

ISSUE: Extruder jam
CAUSE: Extruder fan installed backwards.  Causes overheating, either entering the heat break tube, or hot drive wheel softening/stripping filament
FIX: Extruder fan should blow into the extruder, not extract air from extruder.

Received confirmation on intended orientation from SD support on 3/13.

Very easy to flip - 2 screws, no rebundling of the wires needed.
For the fan I have, the label should face the extruder, with the wire coming from the front of the top.
This isn't a magic bullet for jams, but it helps.

Re: Initial Issues with the SD Press & How to Fix Them.

For those who are unhappy with slic3r but don't want to drop a large amount of money on s3d, I'd recommend giving Cura a try. It's free, so worth looking at. For me, it has improved my print quality no end. I think it doesn't work for everyone, but for me it's a much better solution than slic3r or spending over $100. But then I've never seen s3d running. Maybe that would change my opinion!

Re: Initial Issues with the SD Press & How to Fix Them.

I just found an additional one. I was unable to extrude, and put it down to a hot jam. After totally cleansing everything in acetone, I still couldn't extrude. Cleaned the wheel on the extruder with the brush, and suddenly was extruding again. Weirdly, there didn't seem to be much plastic on there, but there were some small flecks. That was enough to stop it feeding. 3 minutes with the brush and we're off again.

Also totally agree simplify 3d is great,  i would say success in the beginning is about a combination of everything.
simplify 3d is just another tool in the toolbox with slic3r and other useful tools.

Learn each one has strength and weaknesses each is really good at something and bad at others.

so the best solution is what ever you can handle. what do you want to pay with time or money.

in my view there should be a healthy balance there.

Best Regards.
