Topic: What dissolves PETG?
Acetone doesn't. I read that phenol does but I don't know which phenol (there re many variants). Any short answers here? Hoping for something I can buy locally.

Your out of luck. The only things that can do require expensive multiple processes or a license and special equipment to handle.
No cement either? Anybody know where to get water tight (closed end) plastic pop rivets? I see plastic rivet and I see water tight rivets, but not the combination.
My favorite answer of the day
A phenol group is just a benzene ring with an OH (Hydroxyl group on it). There are a lot of chemical compounds that contain a phenol group. Carbolic acid can be purchased online but I bet it will attack more the just PETG. Doing a bit of quick googling shows that aromatic hydrocarbons will dissolve PETG. Aromatic compounds just mean it contains a benzene ring. Toluene might do it but without trying it I can't recommend anything and cannot advise you to try it.
Edit: It has been several years since organic chem so I am a bit rusty on some of this stuff.
Yeh, that's what I was gettin ready to say.
Thanks.
I wonder wht brake cleaner would do? THat's some pretty strong solvent. So is carburetor cleaner. The idea would be to find solvent that could be used to make PET cement.

You're looking for all the "N"s in the PETG column. Some will dissolve better than others, but if it is rated E, F, or G, then it won't dissolve PETG.
Tim, you're a wellspring of valuable information. I see that Pure Acetone will supposedly dissolve, or ta least damage, it.
Thanks! I'm loving this E3D Lite, btw.
here's another reference:

tried acetone on PETG, no effect.
DCM works on PETG. just happens to work excellent on PLA as well.
Most of the chemicals that will dissolve PETG or PLA should not be used at home or even in a shop unless you have a hood to work under and no sources of ignition for the vapors that can travel very far. They are also not consider safe to even get a small wiff of so a respirator is advised as well.

I am just wondering what you need "PET cement" for?
need to glue PETG pieces together? try CA glue (super glue) - the gel type works quite well.
Bed adhesion? you shouldn't need anything special - just like PLA, it should stick to bare glass fine, or glass & hairspray...
or, if you have already spent the money, one of those fancy build plate things...
Phenol is Poissonous and as an chemist I hate working with the stuff. Maybe gasoline might work. Its chalk full of hydrocarbons that might do the job.
