Re: HIPS

nice, got tons of reprap stuff and a few filament extruders, went all in with 3dp stuff and ended up getting burned out, but have build 4reprap printers, using a ramps on cyclone pcb mill and have lots of extra/spare parts for future builds.

i'm working on pcb stuff now and have 2 large cnc/printer/laser builds underway but havent made to much progress over the summer, mainly cuz lack of funds and motivation.

if ya ever need some help with a build or something let me know, i'm waiting on a kickstarter for my 5th printer that has a heated chamber and core xy drive.

Re: HIPS

We don't have a writeup on HIPS yet, if either of you guys want to do one theres $50 in store credit available.

Re: HIPS

I don't have HIPS pellets yet (I just ordered a spool to make sure everything worked the way I wanted) but was planning on doing a writeup after I got the pellets in.

cor5151 - Take it if you have the time to do a writup! If not, I will be making one in a week or two.

Re: HIPS

UPDATE -

Since there isn't much on the forum about HIPS, for future reference to anyone who wishes to use HIPS:

I found best results using about a 75:25 mixture of d-Limonene & Isopropyl alcohol (respectively). The alcohol doesn't mix with the d-Limonene, so an agitator is needed. I used a glass pint jar filled to 40mm from the top and printed a bracket for the motor to attach to the lid and an agitator for the motor. Files are attached.

-Smaller parts took 2-4 hours for the HIPS to dissolve.
-It is best if you remove some support by hand before starting; this cuts down on the dissolve time of course.
-As elmoret stated, HIPS definitely doesn't play well with ABS. It made the parts a little bit soft but they seemed to harden back up after drying. No extensive testing has been done on this.
-The color in ABS seems to dissolve into the d-Limonene. I did not see this problem with PC, so perhaps this is just part of the Styrene in ABS dissolving.
-I also found out that my filament spools are made from Polystyrene (as clearly marked on the spool, dummy!) - so using one as a tool rest for tools used to reach in the jar was really not a good idea.

In this picture, these parts were printed upside down (like the part on the left in the background). The picture doesn't do it justice, but the supported surface is really smooth and flat. Parts here were printed with filastruder PC and store-bought HIPS.

As seen here, the d-Limonene and alcohol separate. You can also see where the orange from my test ABS has dissolved into the d-Limonene. You can see the motor/agitator assembly clearly here.

Agitator mixes the d-Limonene/Alcohol very well and also helps speed up the process by tumbling the parts.

Re: HIPS

I'm out of HIPS pellets atm, but have more otw.
honestly though HIPS has been the easiest material i've extruded, pretty much same as abs but easier.

Can see though how you'd like to have it on here.

also was planning on doing a nylon 6/6 write up, but my last attempt had mixed results, and haven't got it to print very well.
on the other hand I took a ton of pics, tried some funny stuff and also shows a pc extruding setup.
i'll put the pics on imgur when i find the camera.

@josh thanks for the mixing tip, and the agitator model! i'll have to try that.

turns out the sd card with all the pc and pc abs stuff got damaged, so lost those pics, using pc abs on quadcopter frames now and its amazing. anyway here's some quick upload of a bunch of the nylon pics and stuff, still have a few lbs of it so will have to try again, but ya w/e i'll make a thread here about materials and stuff sometime,  http://imgur.com/a/58lZB

received 10lbs of hips today, got it started and been taking pics, i'll be trying to get to that write up after a few prints with it.
