Topic: Convert Makerbot Digitizer to ATLAS 3D?

I did some reading on the ATLAS 3D, and I can see how it's a lot better than a makerbot digitizer. Do you guys think it'd be possible to covert a digitizer? It obviously already has the lazers and a turntable, and I have a couple spare RPi's laying around. Any thoughts are appreciated

And the turntable motor?  Does it have a decent stepper motor?

Could be an interesting project.

I wish you luck with this. I am about to convert a Rubicon scanner which has turned out to be far less useful than a chocolate teapot.

I going to revive this topic.

I finally got the time to tear into the Makerbot Digitizer to see what was inside.

Two lasers, a stepper motor, a camera, and a computer board. The stepper motor looks pretty cheap, but I don't really know what to look for so I'll let you guys tell me if it's any good. The board is totally useless unless I flash my own firmware to it, and the camera is a CHEAP usb camera.

So what do you guys think? Is it worth reusing the parts?

At this point, it looks like the only usable parts are the two lasers! I'm really surprised at the lack of quality for an $800 scanner.

I think you'd be better off reassembling the scanner (and making sure it's functional), then selling it on ebay. 

I'm pretty sure you can get enough (or close enough) for it to buy an Atlas 3D

That's what I mean. 

You can sell it for $400+, then you can buy an Atlas 3D with the Laser cut enclosure and RPi 2 for $300, and have a few bucks left over for a nice lunch.

Well... that would be great if I would have thought about it before I demolished it trying to get it apart roll

That's what I get for being curious, I guess.

Either way, I have all the parts for an atlas other than the enclosure and the RPi shield/ stepper driver.
