Topic: New to this and looking for some technical help

I recently got a chance to play with a makerbot and fell in love with the idea of this.

I just purchased used a Solidoodle 3 and I need help setting it up

thanks

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

Post whatever setup issues you are having in the support section and we can help. It is also worth searching through the forums, the solutions for most common problems are there.

After it is running, take a look at the hacks and mods. You can make your printer even better!

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

Well joe from what I understand the makerbot is a little different.

I have an SD4 the same as a 3 with a case and a few upgrades.

If you have not done so go here and go though each step.

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

okay, I have exhausted all of my ideas.  And yet I do not have any response from my solidoodle.
1.  Pretty confident that I have all drivers and programs running correctly
2.  Once I connect with Repetier, I can tell there is communication, but I cannot manually control
3.  when I attempted to heat up extruder, the program "says" it is heating, my finger cannot feel any heat
4.  The blue bar at the top of the manual control section says " 5 command waiting"  when I push a button for movement or heating the number goes up.  To me it seems like there is a buffer accumulating these commands

I am a mechanical engineer and I'm pretty good at diagnostics....but this has me flummoxed for the moment

Thanks in advance...I will document a complete explanation and share when we finally debug this thing

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

I am sure you probably did, but just covering basics. Have you restarted both the printer and the computer? By restarting the printer I mean killing power and unplugging USB. Some boards can get power from USB so killing power alone does not reset the printer.

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

In RH do you happen to have it set for "virtual printer"?  Do you have the correct COM port selected?

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

Thanks again for the prompts replies...

Repetier had the port set to virtual....I changed it to Port 6

I have turned both the computer and the printer on and off several times....even making sure that the arduino isn't catching power from the usb

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

Does your device manager show it connected to port 6?
What baud rate are you using?
The board isn't actually connected and that is why you are getting "x commands waiting".

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

To all that have helped.....the extruder is heating!!!!

now to start my start up procedure.

Come to Louisville and I've got beer!

Come in May and we'll go to Churchill Downs for some fun!

my next step is to remove the pigtail of filament and install from the reel

I'm going to find a start up procedure any ideas of where to go next would be greatly appreciated

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

The main thing is going to be getting your slice profiles set up.
A couple of things to note about profiles.
Nozzle diameter setting (do you know the actual nozzle size?) most likely a .4
Filament diameter.
Extrusion widths set based on your nozzle diameter.  .42 for .35.....  .48 for .4
Layer heights start at .2963 (.3)
Then print a 20x20 calibration cube that is single perimeter single bottom layer and no top layer.
This can be all done with a simple drawing of a solid cube.  Just use the slicer settings to print a hollow cube.  You'll use this cube to calibrate your extrusion multiplier.
Take a look at the WIKI for calibration of your steps/mm calibration for E: this should be your first step.
That should keep you busy for a while.

Happy printing

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

yes, I'm going to be busy for a while, I only have a roll of ABS at the moment.

Is there anything particular about ABS that I should pay attention too?

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

ABS shrinks but is the go to filament for most.
Enclosing the printer is very helpful.
If you don't have glass on your bed get some.  Any cheap hardware glass will work.  That plus some AquaNet extreme hold will help your prints stick.  Also use it to stick the glass to the platform.  Clips can warp the glass.
A good level bed (in relation to the nozzle) is a must.
ABS works best when the first layer is squished like a nice flat ribbon.
run the bed temp about 105 or as close to that as it will get.
Using a stock hot end run an extruder temp about 215.

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

I know this is the wrong place to put this question, i'm still learning how to use the forum correctly.

My first print was a modest success, the print appears to be airy and flimsy...suggesting to me that the flowrate is way off.

When I attempt to up the temperature to 215, I'm getting a type of temperature fault that shuts down the program before I start.

I've set the 215C limit in both the repetier program and slic3r program....

When I do get the system to print (at 205C) I can see that the drive pully on the filament is slipping...alot.  This suggests to me that the system is trying to feed more and possibly the plastic is not melting completely causing the slipping.

Any thoughts

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

ABS temps are usually 220 to 235. If you printer is shutting down due to overtemp then there is a limit set in your firmware. This can not be changed by host or slicer.

Carl, thanks for the response.

Are you suggesting that I look for a firmware update?
Do you have an idea of where to look?

Im running my new SD3 - bought used

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

Not an update. I am not going to go into detail as I am not an SD3 user but normally you can get a copy of the firmware and make changes to it using Arduino and then upload the revised firmware to the printer. If you are interested in such a thing I would suggest starting a new thread in the SD3 section and ask for help or search and see if such a thread exist on updating or making changes to SD3 firmware.

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

That printer has a PEEK hot end and reads the temps about 15 degrees below actual due to thermistor location.  Increasing MAX temp in firmware is not an option.  I would suggest a PID auto tune.  There's a good chance it is well off the mark.  Check the WIKI for PID auto tune instructions.

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

I used my stock SD4 to print black ABS at 215, and it worked out fine.  (I have an E3Dv6 hot end now, so the temps are a bit different)

These small issues can be frustrating, but stick with it.  Once properly tuned up, you should be getting some very good results from your SD3.  You have to keep a mindset that when you bought a SD, you bought an assembled kit...which leaves lots of room for tuning and mods!

These forums (and the wiki) are a great resource.

Re: New to this and looking for some technical help

Every one of the SD printers is gonna be different - I was printing with ABS just fine at 185-190 with the stock hotend.

Definitely do a PID tune.
